MediaTek is expanding its range of ARM processors for Chromebooks and tablets. The Kompanio 1300T will be the spearhead in the future and borrow from the Dimensity 1200 for smartphones. With the Mali-G77 MC9, the large Cortex-A78 cores have a significantly faster graphics unit than the Kompanio 1200.

Tablets with the Kompanio 1300T should, according to MediaTek will be presented in the course of the third quarter, i.e. by the end of September. The developer has not yet announced Chromebooks with the new chip, but the platform is also designed for it.

The previous flagship, the Kompanio 1200, already offers four of the fast Cortex-A78 cores from ARM and four Cortex-A55 as efficiency cores. The Kompanio 1300T adopts this structure, although it is not yet known whether the clock rates of up to 2.2 GHz or 2.0 GHz will also be adopted unchanged.

Mali-G77 MC9 showed performance in North 2

The GPU of the Kompanio 1300T is larger and significantly more powerful. Instead of the Mali-G57 MC5, the fast Mali-G77 MC9 is used, which MediaTek also installs in the Dimensity 1200 for smartphones. A look at the OnePlus Nord 2 (test) shows what the GPU is capable of. With this chip, it scores significantly better in the GPU benchmarks than the chips in the upper mid-range from Qualcomm. The Mali-G77 MC9 even catches up with smaller Adreno GPUs from the Snapdragon 800 series.

For main memory, the interface for up to 16 GB LPDDR4X-2133 is taken over, with flash memory for the user, however, faster UFS 3.1 instead of 2.1 can now be connected. Here too, the Nord 2 shows the leap in performance that brings.

5G and HDR for Chromebooks and tablets

MediaTek covers the topic of connectivity with an integrated 5G modem, which is designed for the range below 6 GHz, as well as the Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 standards.

Additional support for Chromebooks and tablets includes screens with a resolution of up to 2.5K at up to 120 Hz with a variable refresh rate and HDR10 +. Sensors with up to 108 megapixels are supported for cameras and video recordings are possible in up to 4K60 including HDR. Voice assistants such as the Google Assistant are handled via a voice-on-wakeup function, which is supposed to be particularly energy-saving.
