In the years 1981–1988, there was an armed conflict between Iran and Iraq. In the final phase of the conflict, Iran was attacked on several occasions by an armed branch of the political organization Mujahedin of the Iranian People (Mujahedin). The attacks were backed by the Iraqi army.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa following the attacks to execute prisoners in Iranian prisons who belonged to or sympathized with the Mujahideen who were loyal to their convictions. The detainee is charged with conspiracy to commit misconduct or similar role in the Gohardasht prison in Karaj, Iran, between July 30, 1988 and August 16, 1988, together with and in agreement with others. perpetrators, intentionally deprived of the lives of a very large number of prisoners who belonged to or sympathized with the Mujahedin and subjected others to torture and inhuman treatment.

The indictment also includes the murder of a large number of prisoners whose ideology/religious beliefs were found to be in conflict with the theocratic state of Iran.

– Crimes against humanity did not become part of the Swedish Criminal Code until 1 July 2014, which is why we in the prosecution have not been able to use the classification when the accused acts took place before that. The indictment therefore refers to the headings violations of international law, serious crimes and murders, says chamber prosecutor Kristina Lindhoff Carleson in a statement.
