Weekly review and outlook: AMD kills Intel, games kills GPU, Google kills search queries

Last week, ComputerBase looked at the smallest eight-cores from AMD and Intel, DLSS in Red Dead Redemption 2 and the OnePlus Nord 2. Reports on graphics card defects in New World from Amazon, a new kill switch from Google and iPhone 13 rumors were also well received.

Ryzen 7 5800X wins eight-core comparison

The review of the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, Intel Core i7-11700 and Core i7-11700K published on Wednesday of this week attracted the greatest interest. In the test, the previous impressions of the Zen 3 and Rocket Lake-S were confirmed, as Intel once again found out that the processors, in particular, deliver performance at a very high level, especially when they are completely off the TDP line. This is mainly the case in DIY PCs, but less so with OEM computers, for which a tighter TDP corset is often applied. In the worst-case scenario, the performance can then drop by more than 40 percent.

Especially considering this aspect, the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X emerges as the winner in the comparison. Not only is there a little more performance in single and multi-core applications as well as in games, but the problem of consumption that is omnipresent at Intel is not present here. It just works, is the conclusion to the eight-core from AMD.

Convincing DLSS in Red Dead Redemption 2

The consideration of Nvidia DLSS in Red Dead Redemption 2, which has been offered in the game since this week, was also frequently read. Despite minor problems, the implementation convinced in the test, because many details have been lost with the game's anti-aliasing so far. DLSS does this job better by making vegetation, houses, characters and almost all other objects visibly sharper and often only recognizable when moving with intelligent AI upsampling.

OnePlus Nord 2 starts for 400 euros

The new middle class smartphone from OnePlus was also tested. The Nord 2 delivers a coherent overall package for 400 euros, which is powered by MediaTek instead of Qualcomm for the first time. Above all, the new chip offers more gaming performance, which Snapdragon processors only offer in the more expensive series. Smaller savings measures such as not using 120 Hz, wireless charging or IP certification show that OnePlus maintains a certain distance from the upper class despite “Never Settle”.

New World kills RTX 3090

In the daily news, a problem in Amazon's New World game made it to the top. Problems in connection with the GeForce RTX 3090 from EVGA can lead to the fact that the graphics card suffers a defect. It is believed that the lack of FPS limitation in the game menu leads to extremely high FPS, which causes excessive stress. The exact cause has not yet been clarified, but there is at least a patch that is supposed to limit the FPS in the game menu.

Google kills search queries

Also of interest was a new kill switch for Google search, which clears the user's search queries from the last 15 minutes in one fell swoop. The function was introduced in combination with a new verification when accessing the entire search history of the user. There was also a popular message about the iPhone 13, which is rumored to have an always-on display for status messages such as time, date and notifications for the first time.
