With the OnePlus Buds Pro, OnePlus is introducing new wireless in-ear headphones that rely on active hybrid noise cancellation (ANC) and, above all, should compete with Apple's market share. This plan is also reflected in the design, even if the OnePlus Buds Pro use a black instead of white design.

Hybrid ANC switches the environment off

The active noise suppression is intended to reduce ambient noise by up to 40 dB – an above-average value that would represent a very high level of attenuation. The ANC does not simply apply the broadest possible filter over the sound, but adapts automatically and continuously to the environment in order to be able to react to changed noises and levels. Both inward and outward-facing microphones are used for this (feed-forward and feedback processing).

The new Zen Mode Air function is intended to free you from audible distractions or from absolute silence and works together with the noise suppression function. ComputerBase does not have any details yet.

OnePlus promises telephony without background noise

Wind noise suppression in conjunction with a 3-microphone algorithm is intended to ensure that the wearer remains clearly understandable when telephoning, even in noisy, windy environments. OnePlus not only relies on electronic, algorithmic filtering, but also promises to have placed emphasis on physical wind and ambient noise suppression achieved by the design during the development of the earphones. OnePlus calls the algorithmic noise suppression to improve speech quality ELEVOC.

With OnePlus Audio ID, OnePlus also offers the option of creating different hearing profiles in order to achieve an individually tailored sound.

For the sound, OnePlus relies on dynamic drivers with a diameter of 11 mm and Dolby Atmos support Company mainly advertises with a “full bass”. Bluetooth 5.2 serves as the wireless standard, which is supposed to achieve a latency of only 94 ms when the “Pro-Gaming” mode is switched on. OnePlus has not communicated details about the supported audio codecs in advance.

5 or 7 hours of battery life with and without ANC

The battery life of the OnePlus Buds Pro is given as 5 hours with activated ANC for the earphones alone and a further 23 hours via the charging case. If you do not use ANC, the battery life should be extended to up to 7 hours, which then means 31 more hours via the charging case. Combined, the OnePlus Buds Pro can be used for up to 28 hours with ANC or up to 38 hours without ANC.

Warp Charge and (Reverse ) Wireless Charging

The fast charging mode called Warp Charge ensures that after 10 minutes of charging, up to 10 hours of battery life are possible again via earphones and charging case. The charging case can be charged wirelessly according to the Qi standard. In conjunction with a OnePlus 9 Pro, the smartphone can also serve as a wireless charging source using reverse charging technology.

According to IP55 against dust and water protected

The new Buds Pro are IP55 protected against the ingress of dust (in damaging amounts) and water (jets of water from any angle), so that they can also be used without hesitation during sport or can be used in the rain.

Price and availability

Update 07/22/2021 5:19 pm

After the presentation of the OnePlus Buds Pro further details became known.

LHDC on Android as HD codec

In terms of audio codecs, the OnePlus Buds Pro not only support SBC and AAC, but also the “Low Latency High-Definition Audio Codec” (LHDC) under Android if the smartphone supports this codec. For OnePlus smartphones, LHDC is to be limited to the OnePlus 9 Pro/9 devices, which will be updated to the next OxygenOS version via OTA within 2021, and subsequent smartphone innovations. However, Nord devices will not support LHDC. LHDC supports the bit rates 400, 560 and 900 kbit/s with a sampling depth of 24 bits and a sampling rate of 96 kHz.

The low latency of 94 ms should only be in connection with a compatible OnePlus smartphone.

The charging case is also IPX4 protected

In addition, further specifications are now available. According to this, the charging case measures 60.1 × 49 × 24.9 mm and weighs 52 grams, so it is not one of the lightest. Each earbud, however, weighs 4.35 grams. The capacity of the batteries in the earbuds is 40 mAh, while the charging case houses a 520 mAh battery. In addition, the charging case is protected against splash water in accordance with IPX4.

OnePlus specifies the sensitivity of the audio driver as 98 dB @ 1 kHz, the frequency response covers from 20 to 20,000 Hz normal range.
