When a person is convicted of several crimes, the court normally decides a joint punishment based on the seriousness of the overall crime.
Minister of Justice Morgan Johansson considers that this is admittedly “a reasonable order”, but that at the same time, it is important to clearly state that crime should never pay off.
– If the legislation is perceived as meaning that after a certain number of crimes it does not matter that a perpetrator commits further crimes, give the impression that the legal system is ultimately indifferent to the damage caused by the crime. It risks undermining the credibility and legitimacy of the system. In the case of multiple crimes, the entire penalty scale should be used to an increasing extent. It is therefore high time to review the current regulations, says Morgan Johansson.
The government appoints an inquiry to review the legislation. The inquiry is part of the government's package of measures to intensify work against men's violence against women. The investigator will be the President of the Court of Appeal Anders Perklev and the investigation must be reported no later than January 20, 2023.
