Globalfoundries will expand Fab 8 in Malta in the US state of New York as well as the complex in Singapore for a rapid increase in capacity. At the same time, a new factory is also being built, the parameters of which have so far been kept very thin.

A lot of public money for new and expansion

Here, too, the quick decision is based on the current political situation. The USA, like Europe, want to see more semiconductor production in their own country or in the region, which is why generous subsidies and further relief are promised. In view of this, any of the major industry giants would be ill advised not to tap at least part of these funds.

And so the announcement of a new Fab 8.2 building by Globalfoundries in the same region as Fab 8 reads very clearly, as if the first phase of planning had just started here. The words private-public partnership, in German public-private partnership, show that the US government wants to have a say, because it will pay a large part. Former military officials were also present at the announcement. After the loss of IBM as one of their chip manufacturers, this area has a great interest in getting the technology for their weapons from their own country. In the end, the new building should double the capacity of the previous complex.

Before that, Globalfoundries will, like in Singapore, recently also take around one billion US dollars in hand in the factory in Dresden, Germany, in order to expand and optimize the existing structures in order to enable more semiconductor products for comparatively low costs. Fab 8 is to receive a capacity increase of almost 20,000 wafers per month, 150,000 more wafers per year is the set goal. The price structure is cheaper for small expansions, the expansion in Singapore is significantly larger with an additional output of 450,000 wafers per year, but costs accordingly more at just under 4 billion US dollars. This quickly shows how many additional buildings need to be erected or whether existing clean room capacities can simply be used even better.

New brand identity

Correspondingly, Globalfoundries is changing its public appearance. A new logo is intended to mark the way into the future. The roughly six billion US dollars in sales that the group made last year will be followed by significantly more in the future. max-width: 630px “>
