iOS 14.7 available: these are the new features

You would almost forget it with all the iOS 15 news, but Apple also had a new update of iOS 14 in development. iOS 14.7 is already the seventh major update for the iPhone. Both updates are now available for both the iPhone and iPad and contain some nice improvements, including one for the Weather app on the iPhone.

  • Air quality in the Netherlands
  • Timers on HomePod
  • MagSafe Battery Pack Support
  • Podcasts
  • Apple Card Family (US)
  • Bug fixes and improvements

Update 19:50: Currently iPadOS 14.7 is not available yet. Apple normally releases the update for the iPad at the same time as the iOS version for the iPhone, but that's not the case now. We'll update this article as soon as we know more.

#1 Measuring air quality in the Weather app
iOS 14.7 contains a new feature for the Netherlands. In the Weather app in iOS 14.7 you can view the air quality. With a colored bar you can see approximately how clean the air is. In addition to the Weather app, you'll also see this in the Maps app and on the Apple Watch in watchOS 7.6.

You can read more about it in our article about air quality in the Weather app in iOS 14.7. In iOS 15, Apple is adding many more features to the Weather app.

#2 Timer on the HomePod via Home
It has been possible to set a timer for much longer. on the HomePod, but that always had to be done via Siri. There was no manual way to trigger a timer for the HomePod via an app. This is possible in iOS 14.7, namely via the Home app. As soon as you long-press the HomePod there, the timer option will automatically appear.

#3 MagSafe Battery Pack Support
Apple recently announced the MagSafe Battery Pack, a new accessory that works with MagSafe on the iPhone 12. It is a power bank that you magnetically stick to the back of the iPhone, so that the iPhone lasts much longer. To fully utilize the power bank, you need iOS 14.7 or later. For example, you can view the battery status via the Battery widget, with a matching icon.

#4 Improvement for Podcasts app
The Podcasts app has been criticized a lot since the iOS 14.5 update, and Apple is gradually adjusting a number of options and adding new features. As of iOS 14.7, you can choose in your library to watch all shows or only the shows you follow. You can find this option at Library > Programs and then you can choose Followed or All. In addition to the programs you follow, the All option also shows the shows you have listened to before.

#5 Apple Card Family improvement
In the US, iPhone users can apply for the Apple Card. Apple Card Family has also been available for some time, with which you can share a payment card with members of the family. As of iOS 14.7, there is an option to combine credit limits and you can share a joint account with an existing Apple Card user. This feature is unfortunately not available in the Netherlands or Belgium, but if it ever comes our way, at least you'll know what's possible.

#6 Bug fixes and improvements
Apple has also made some other bug fixes and improvements behind the scenes in iOS 14.7. For example, an issue that prevented playlist sharing in Apple Music has been fixed, as well as an issue with Dolby Atmos and lossless audio in Apple Music. Additionally, there was an issue where the battery service warning on the iPhone 11 disappeared after a reboot and braille displays could show incorrect information when composing an email. Both of these issues have now been resolved. The previous Wi-Fi bug has also been fixed in iOS 14.7.

Over the past month, some users with iOS 14.6 have been experiencing a battery life issue that causes the iPhone to drain very quickly . While we're not sure yet, we hope Apple has fixed that in this update. Should we know more about exact bug fixes related to this issue, read more here.
