Since May 2021, the police in southern Stockholm have had a pilot operation for faster prosecution in graffiti cases.

The first case has now been decided in court. Södertörn District Court has sentenced a man to 14 days in prison for having scrawled on property belonging to Greater Stockholm Local Transport (SL). three occasions, to a suspended sentence and a daily fine. As the crime in question was committed during the probationary period and relates to the same type of crime, the district court considers that the punishment should be imprisonment. The verdict was handed down about six weeks after the crime.

– The procedure for dealing with damage to graffiti in faster prosecution is unique and it is extra fun that in this first case we see the effect of the quick prosecution through a sentence of imprisonment, says Magnus Karlsson, operations manager, faster prosecution, police area Stockholm south, on the police website.

He continues:

– Initially, we only handle cases where SL is the plaintiff. This is due to SL's fast and efficient handling of their compensation claims. Our hope is to be able to develop the concept for other vandalism with other plaintiffs in the future.
