We hardly watch traditional TV anymore. Streaming video services like Apple TV+ (try for free), Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video are more important than ever. But local providers such as Videoland, Film1 and Ziggo also have plenty to offer. More series are added every week and it is nice if you know which series, films and documentaries really stand out. We have therefore made a selection.
New on Apple TV+: Schmigadoon!
schmigadoon! is a new musical comedy on Apple TV+, starring Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key. A backpacking couple is eager to rekindle their relationship. They find themselves in a strange, musical city that they cannot escape until they find ‘true love’ have found. Schmigadoon is actually a parody of classic musicals and is set in the 1940s. The first season will consist of six episodes and will star an array of Broadway veterans including Alan Cumming, Kristin Chenoweth, Aaron Tveit, Dove Cameron, Ariana DeBose, Fred Armisen, Jaime Camil, Jane Krakowski and Ann Harada. We have already looked and although it is very entertaining, it will probably appeal mainly to the musical audience. You either love it or you don't. If you are a fan of the work of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe or Meredith Wilson, then it will be a feast of recognition. Successes like Hamilton will also have brought in a whole new audience, so it makes sense for Apple to capitalize on this.
Each episode lasts about half an hour and the first two are now available to watch.
