In Germany 93 people have been confirmed dead, in Belgium 14 and in Italy one person. In addition, about 1,300 people have been reported missing in Germany, and the death toll is expected to rise. Precipitation has been greatest in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate in the western part of Germany. In some places, over 200 millimeters of rain fell within 24 hours.

Flooding is not uncommon in Germany and in other countries on the continent. However, the effects of the floods have worsened during the 20th century due to a growing population. In Germany, the recent floods are considered to be the worst natural disaster to hit the country in a very long time.
