With the HAS5300 series, Synology is launching new SAS hard drives in 3.5-inch form factors with 16, 12 and 8 terabytes under its own brand for in-house NAS systems. They complement the SATA drives of the HAT5300 series presented in January of this year (test).
Apart from the SAS protocol, the technical data of the HAS5300 are almost completely identical to those of the HAT5300 series. The officially supported workloads are also with the new hard drives at 550 terabytes per year and Synology states 2.5 million hours of mean operating time to failure (MTTF).
With the maximum continuous transfer rate, the new models are each slightly below the SATA variants. If the HAS5300-8T reaches 230 MB/s, according to Synology, the HAT5300-8T is 241.2 MB/s, while the HAS5300-12T and HAS5300-16T achieve 260 MB/s and 262 with 242 MB/s MB/s looks similar to 274.7 MB/s. The hard disks from Toshiba's MG06/07/08 series serve as the technical basis for the HAS5300 series. Technically, the HAS5300-8T corresponds to the Toshiba MG06SCA800E, the HAS5300-12T to the MG07SCA12TE and the HAS5300-16T to the MG08SCA16TE.
Synology sees primarily corporate customers who rely on the set scalable storage solutions of the SA and UC series from Synology, in which up to 180 drives can be installed at the same time and use large-area video surveillance, multimedia post-processing or other applications with large amounts of data.
Synology promises faster RAID rebuilds
The coordination and optimization of the firmware should not only ensure unrestricted compatibility between Synology NAS and Synology HDDs, but also accelerate areas such as RAID rebuilding. Compared to other, comparable drives, this should be carried out 27 percent faster with the HAS5300 HDDs, according to Synology, so that the RAID arrays are faulty and at risk of failure for a correspondingly shorter period of time.
As with the HAT5300 series, the HAS5300 series models can receive firmware updates directly from Synology's NAS operating system, DiskStation Manager (DSM). Synology also offers a 5-year limited warranty on the HAS5300 series.
Following the naming
In January, Synology announced details on naming the hard drives under its own label, which can also be resolved in the HAS5300 series. HAS5300-8T stands for Hard Drive, SAS, Mid-range Enterprise, 3.5 inch, 00 generation and 8 TB.
H = HDD AT = SATA
AS = SAS
NV = NVMe 3 = “Entry- level Enterprise “
5 =” Mid-range Enterprise “2 = 2.5 inches
3 = 3.5 inches
4 = M.2 2280
5 = M.2 22110 00, 10 , 20 … 480 GB, 960 GB, 8 TB …
HAS5300 series already available in stores
< p class = "p text-width"> The HAS5300 drives with 16, 12 and 8 TB are to be available worldwide with immediate effect, Synology does not give a recommended retail price. The HAS5300-8T is listed from around 391 euros, the HAS5300-12T, however, costs 670 euros and the HAS5300-16T is offered for 786 euros. A direct comparison between the Synology HAS5300-12T and the Toshiba MG07SCA12TE, i.e. the 12 TB model in each case, again shows the high price difference, because the Toshiba MG07SCA12TE is already available for around 331 euros, around half.
