Jair Bolsonaro was taken to a hospital in Brasilia on Wednesday to be kept under observation for 24 to 48 hours.
Representatives of the Brazilian president then announced that he was taken to Sao Paulo to evaluated for a possible emergency operation.
Local media reports that Bolsonaro has suffered from abdominal pain and has been seen hiccuping during his recent public appearances. Last week, he blamed the hiccup on medication he received when he underwent dental surgery a month earlier.
Bolsonaro is no novice when it comes to hospital visits. During the 2018 presidential election campaign, he was stabbed in the abdomen by a left-wing activist, but survived after undergoing several operations.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, from his hospital bed, Bolsonaro describes his hospital stay as a “consequence of the 2018 assassination attempt”.
Jair Bolsonaro also tested positive for covid-19 several times last summer. During the quarantine, the president was bitten by an emu at a press photo shoot.
