Alitalia retires, Italy takes off Air Transport from 15 October

It seems that the Alitalia saga has reached a turning point , indeed, a dead end for the old company & agrave; in extraordinary administration for 4 years which, from 14 October, will go; retired to make room for ITA , Italy Air Transport. The confirmation comes through a note from the Ministry of Economy, shareholders of ITA and a fundamental part in the bargaining that takes place; held in these days with the European Commission:

Yes & egrave; positively concluded the discussion with the European Commission on the establishment of Italia Trasporti Aereo (ITA). The new company & agrave; will be fully operational starting next October 15, the date on which & egrave; the first flights are expected to take off

The solution arises as expected from a painful compromise that displeases the unions, forced to see the number of employees of the new group drastically reduced: from the current 10,500 it will pass to 2,750-2,950 in the start-up period . They are the few who will manage the business & quot; Aviation & quot ;, they will be progressively joined by others until reaching the 5,500-5,700 expected by the end of the industrial plan (2025).

With the ok of the Commission it will be possible; launch the capital increase of 700 million euros that will project ITA towards a new direction that the Mef hopes will create the basis for a national carrier for independent, solid and sustainable air transport.

THE FLEET AND THE NEW DESTINATIONS

The new ITA will be able to therefore acquire the assets needed to manage the flights (Aviation) through direct negotiation with the Extraordinary Administration of Alitalia, while the activities will end up at auction; of the & quot; Ground Handling & quot; sector and & quot; Maintenance & quot ;. ITA will be able to participate in the two auctions and exploit & agrave; initially the services of these sectors through classic supply contracts. Cambier & agrave; inevitably also the fleet that immediately foresees 52 planes available, will be lost & agrave; however some space in spite of fewer links:

ITA partir & agrave; with an allocation of slots consistent with the initial size of its fleet, maintaining 85% of the slots currently held by Alitalia at the Milan Linate airport and 43% of the slots at Rome Fiumicino , the latter airport, less congested than Linate and with greater availability; of slots that can be acquired to support the growth of flights expected over the plan span

The two airports will therefore be the main hubs from which the first 61 routes will unfold to 45 destinations, destined to become 89 routes and 74 destinations in 2025. The company will immediately be served by 52 aircraft, of these 7 wide body and 45 narrow body , but in 2022 the fleet will add; 26 new units, of which 13 are wide body (generally used in the long haul). By 2025 the number of aircraft will increase; up to 105 and conter & agrave; on an impressive turnover that will send; 77% of the old models retired; in all there will be 23 wide bodies and 82 narrow bodies.

Among the long-range destinations planned in the IATA Winter 2021 ITA station are New York (from Rome and Milan), Tokyo Haneda, Boston and Miami from Rome. Connections with Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Washington and Los Angeles are expected for next summer. On the medium range, of course, the connections with the main cities remain. of the Old Continent from both hubs, therefore Paris, London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt and Geneva. Rome will boast; also connections with Madrid, Athens, Tel Aviv, Cairo, Tunis and Algiers. While national connections with 21 Italian airports will be guaranteed.

WHAT GOES TO THE MILLEMIGLIA PROGRAM?

Sar & agrave; the economic aspect and the success of the relaunch plan are fundamental, specifically ITA expects an operational breakeven by the third quarter of 2023 and a turnover of 3.3 billion euros in 2025, with EBIT (Earnings Before Interests and Taxes ) of 209 million euros. Now the ball goes to ITA who has exactly three months for the painful transition , hoping that it will be the last and the mistakes made by the & quot; various & quot; Alitalia will not be repeated.

The passage concerning the loyalty program needs to be clarified; ITA will doter & agrave; in fact of a new loyalty program, modern and efficient. Difficult to understand what will happen to MilleMiglia and if the points accumulated by loyal travelers will be lost.
