iPhone 13: ’90 million units by 2021′
Usually the new iPhone is announced in September and sales start shortly after. In recent years, Apple has managed to sell about 75 million from then until the end of the calendar year. New rumors from Bloomberg indicate that Apple expects a record year: the company hopes to sell about 20% more devices this year compared to last year.
This expected increase in sales is remarkable, given that at the same time, the iPhone 13 is not expected to bring about any major changes. Apple introduced a new design last year with the iPhone 12 that will last for the next few years. In 2021 it concerns a few smaller improvements that you do not see so quickly at first glance. One of the reasons for Apple to produce more is the foreign sanctions on smartphone giant Huawei. As a result, Apple expects more people to opt for an iPhone.
Bloomberg thinks that the extra demand for iPhones can partly be explained by the vaccinations against the corona virus. There will be people who didn't buy the iPhone 12 because these are financially uncertain times. Those times now seem (almost) over. Apple will also once again emphasize the 5G capabilities of the iPhone, as the brand already did with the iPhone 12. Traditionally, the iPhone 13 will arrive in September, Bloomberg expects. Last year, the announcement was delayed by a month due to the pandemic.
One of Bloomberg's sources reports that it may not be possible to actually produce the desired 90 million on time. The actual number could be a few million units lower. If this is the case, delivery times may increase at launch.
‘iPhone 13 will have an LTPO screen with smaller notch’
Some of the minor improvements are on the front of the iPhone, according to Bloomberg's rumor. In short, the iPhone 13 gets a smaller notch and an LTPO screen. The LTPO screen technology makes it possible to reduce the refresh rate to 1 time per second (1 Hz). This screen is already in the Apple Watch and is therefore familiar territory for Apple. One variant of the iPhone 13 gets this screen. That is probably the most expensive variant.
Although the LTPO screen on Apple's smartwatch is mainly for the Always On screen, on the iPhone 13 it will serve for better battery life with still screens. For example, the screen needs to be refreshed less often when you read a newspaper article. Furthermore, Apple is working on a smaller notch for the iPhone 13. That provides more screen space. In a separate article we describe all the rumors about the iPhone 13 screen.
What will remain the same is the screen size. Bloomberg emphasizes that Apple is once again releasing a mini version of the iPhone. Like its predecessor, the iPhone 13 would have a 5.4-inch, 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch screen depending on the variant. Earlier rumors indicated that 5.4-inch was not a success and that Apple stopped the iPhone 12 mini production.
