Ring: end-to-end encryption starts in Germany

At the beginning of the year, Ring started end-to-end encryption for its in-house security cameras and video doorbells in the USA, and now the company has declared the technical preview to have been successfully completed activates the function that increases security for all users of Ring products worldwide.

End-to-end encryption is optional and must be activated by the customer in the Ring app in order to be able to use it. Without it, videos will always be stored and transmitted encrypted at Ring (encryption during transmission) – also in the future -, an end-to-end encryption in which the key for decryption is only stored on the end device itself and the data is only stored in this way can be decrypted by this, but has not been used so far. If end-to-end encryption is activated, the user can only access the videos with the device on which it was activated. It is not possible for other end devices to call up the videos, even if they belong to the user. This restriction is inevitable with end-to-end encryption.

2FA with authentication apps and CAPTCHAs

To further increase data protection, Ring is also introducing support for authentication apps for two-factor authentication and the integration of CAPTCHAs to protect customer account information and prevent automated login attempts.

Easier resale through device transfer

Ring will also offer an automated service that will allow customers to use devices safely and comfortably in the future can be transferred to new users. Ring would like to increase the user friendliness. Previously, customers had to call customer service so that new owners could scan the code during setup and follow the instructions in the Ring app.
