New Auto, the Volkswagen Group and the 2030 revolution: electric and autonomous

Herbert Diess , fresh from his renewal as CEO of the Volkswagen Group, presented the strategy & quot; New Auto & quot; valid until 2030. A plan designed to keep the Group in the role of global leader in an automotive industry characterized by mobility; electrical and software. To achieve its goals, VAG relies on the strength of its brands on the one hand, and on technology platforms on the other.

Standard platforms for software and vehicle mechatronics will bring cost benefits and quality, as well as & eacute; economies of scale, in the same way as a multi-brand strategy for batteries and recharging and a mobility platform. Another central element of the 2030 Strategy is; & quot; People & amp; Transformation & quot ;. In the transition from a company of traditional engineers and skilled workers to the new areas that characterize a tech company , the opportunities individual changes offered to employees will be a decisive factor for success. Successful results will therefore require sustainable models for workforce transformation and employee training across a large number of industries.

We have set ourselves a strategic goal of becoming a global leader in electric vehicles and we are on track. We are now setting new benchmarks. Based on the software, the next change is much more; radical & egrave; the transition to cars much more; safe, intelligent and finally autonomous.

The premium world & egrave; that of Audi will be the workhorse for a clash with rival brands that focuses on the mix between performance and luxury. Audi, for & ograve;, will be & agrave; also the brand that will take care of it; of the software for the entire group, thus unifying the development; economies of scale need to be optimized.

Volkswagen aims to be the market leader in the world of electric cars and, within the Group, will lead electrification by proposing its technologies to other brands: Cupra will concentrate; on emotion, Skoda on the & quot; value for money & quot; and so on, each with the distinctive characteristics that customers have come to know over time and with the unique basis represented by shared platforms.

Porsche will be the purely sports brand: integrated into the Group but independent, the manufacturer aims for 80% of electric power in 2030. Europe, China and America will always be the main markets of the Group where it will work; to increase market shares.

The Volkswagen Group already has; allocated 73 billion euros for new technologies from 2021 to 2025, equal to 50% of total investments. The Group will continue & agrave; also to increase the efficiency and & egrave; on track to meet its fixed cost reduction target of 5% it has set for the next two years. Let's see the main details of the new strategy.

SUSTAINABILITY?

For 2030 and one of the objectives of the Group to reduce its carbon footprint of cars by 30% (compared to 2018) over their entire life cycle, in line with the Paris Agreement.

During the same period, the share of electric vehicles should rise to 50%, while in 2040 almost 100% . By that date, therefore, almost all of the Group's new vehicles sold in the main markets should be zero-emission. By 2050, the aim is for & quot; full neutrality & agrave; climatic & quot ;.

SINGLE SSP PLATFORM AND THE SOFTWARE

One of the pillars of the Group's strategy is; the new SSP (Scalable Systems Platform) which from 2026 onwards will be; used only as a basis for electric vehicles. On this platform, over 40 million battery-powered cars will be born. As happens today for the MEB platform, the SSP will also be; offered to other manufacturers. The Group will invest; around 800 million euros in a new research and development center in Wolfsburg, where it will come; the SSP platform was designed.

Another pillar of the German Group's strategy & egrave; the work that the CARIAD division is carrying out in the development of a software stack that will become; the backbone for all the cars of the Group. Currently, it is working on three platforms. The current one, for example, allows you to enable OTA updates on cars based on the MEB architecture (such as ID.4).

In 2023, CARIAD will release version 1.2 which will bring; a series of novelties; including a new unified infotainment system and OTA updates for Audi and Porsche vehicles. Finally, in 2025 the division expects to launch a new unified and scalable software platform. This is 2.0 which will include & agrave; a unified operating system for the vehicles of all the Group's brands. Furthermore, it will be & agrave; made available the autonomous driving of Level 4 .

Thanks to the data that will arrive from its fleet of cars, the Volkswagen Group will succeed; to make it evolve more the software quickly. The cars will thus be able to constantly improve with each update.

BATTERIES AND CHARGING

As already had emerged during its Power Day, the Volkswagen Group is working hard on the battery front. In this regard & egrave; the commitment to the creation of a & quot; unified cell & quot; was reaffirmedthat will allow; an important cost reduction. Furthermore, 6 Gigafactories will be created by 2030 which will make it possible to have a capacity; production of 240 GWh by 2030. Of those already; announced, one will be; made in Skellefte & aring;, Sweden and the second in Salzgitter, Germany.

On the front of the Gigafactory there & # 39; & egrave; a novelty. In fact, a third cell factory should be built in Spain with a production of 40 GWh by 2030. The site will allow; also to support the production of electricity in the country. From 2025, in Spain it will be; built the new small electric. The final decision will depend on from the general framework and state subsidies.

The Volkswagen Group also intends to create a supply chain for batteries entirely under its control , from raw materials to recycling. Another important point is; the recharge. In fact, the Group intends to create an entire ecosystem of services around its vehicles to simplify the energy supply process for customers. To all this is added the goal of enhancing public infrastructure in China, Europe and America. In this regard, we recall today's announcement of the joint venture with Enel X.

AUTONOMOUS GUIDE

The Volkswagen Group has reiterated its plans to offer a transport service based on self-driving shuttles that will use the platform developed by Argo.AI. The debut of this innovative transport service will take place; in Europe during 2025. Currently it is; a pilot project is underway in Munich. VAG is considering launching similar projects in other cities. in Germany, China and the United States.

In the future, the Group intends to bring together all its services related to mobility; within a single platform. For cars, on the other hand, the development of autonomous driving will be; entrusted to the CARIAD division.
