Still very high demand on the PC market will boost sales in the desktop, notebook and workstation sectors in the second quarter of 2021, as the analysts at IDC report. However, the demand curve is flattening out slightly. Lenovo has recently become number one with over 20 million devices sold.
A total of 83.614 million devices in the PC segment were sold worldwide in the second quarter of 2021, according to current statistics from IDC. This corresponds to a growth of 13.2 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. The figures cover the desktop, notebook and workstation sectors, with the desktop in particular overtaking the notebook in terms of growth. IDC justifies this with the lack of chips, which is having a stronger influence on the notebook market.
growth curve is flattening
IDC continues to rate the growth rate of 13 percent year-on-year as high, but also recognizes a flattening curve. In a comparison of the first quarter of 2021 with 2020, an increase of 55.9 percent was recorded, in the fourth quarter of 2020 to 2019 it was 25.8 percent. IDC analyst Neha Mahajan expects a higher demand for new PCs in the commercial environment, now that more stores are allowed to reopen, but in the consumer segment the priorities would now be in other areas with the openings, after numerous users had spent more than a year have invested in new PCs.
Lenovo ahead of HP, Dell, Apple and Acer
Lenovo has recently led the market, followed by HP , Dell as well as Apple and Acer. After taking the lead in 2Q20, HP is closely on Lenovo's heels, but recently grew by only 2.7 percent, but far less strongly than Lenovo (14.9%). Dell follows at a greater distance and there is practically a stalemate between Apple and Acer with a difference of 0.1 percent in market share, which is why IDC leads both companies in fourth place.
