Google Drive for desktop makes it easier to access your files

Google Drive for the desktop

With Drive for the desktop you have one app for consumers and business users, which already contains the most wanted features. In addition, the app has been adapted for recent macOS and Windows versions, with better support for the Photos Library on the Mac and syncing with iCloud.

The app is also better able to sync edited photos and works with external storage media such as portable SSDs. People who still use Backup and Sync will get a pop-up to persuade them to switch to the new app in the coming weeks. They must do so before September 2021. After that, no more files will be uploaded to Google's online storage.

Business customers can get started with the switch from August 18. They often use another desktop app for backing up their data, namely Drive File Stream. As of October, the old app no longer works. With one app, Google can offer all users the same capabilities, such as synchronizing local folders (such as Documents and Desktop) and multiple accounts. Furthermore, you can eventually synchronize files for offline use, there is a dark mode and it works together with some Microsoft Office and Outlook functions. This comes in version 49 of Google Drive for the desktop. When introduced, there are mainly basic functions, such as safely storing your files, accessing Google Drive from your computer and using 4 different accounts side by side, without having to switch every time.
