Audi Grand Sphere, the concept of the future electric flagship

New technologies are changing the way people move. Think of electrification but also of the future arrival of autonomous driving. These changes will also have a strong impact on how new cars are designed . And precisely in this regard, Audi wanted to tell about how it will evolve; the style of its future models.

In the past, the dimensions of the combustion engine they had an important impact on the proportions of the cars. The models of the future will be profoundly different due, above all, to the much more electric motors; compact than the endothermic ones that will be placed in correspondence of the axles. For designers there will be, therefore, much more; freedom in designing the shapes of the cars. The passenger compartment, also thanks to the fact that the batteries will be placed in the underbody, will grow; in size. With the future advent of autonomous driving, the steering wheel and pedals will no longer be; indispensable, to the advantage of modularity; interior.

The passenger compartment of the Audi of the future will not be; only a control post, but & igrave; will reflect the personal needs of the customer, integrating multiple advanced functions.

THE DESIGN OF THE FUTURE

An example of how to evolve; the Audi style & egrave; enclosed within three concept cars which will be presented in the coming months: Audi Sky Sphere, Audi Grand Sphere and Audi Urban Sphere. Not new names as, recently, we already had; seen some very early sketches.

Thanks to three unpublished show cars & ndash; Audi sky sphere, Audi grand sphere and Audi urban sphere & ndash; in the next ten months Audi will anticipate; the stylistic features of the future models of the four rings. The three design concepts are united by the extraordinary freedom; style guaranteed by electric propulsion and level 4 autonomous driving as well as; from the close collaboration in the definition of forms between the Audi Design Centers in Ingolstadt, Malibu and Beijing. Audi grand sphere, in particular, is an avant-garde interpretation of mobility; in the luxury segment as well as & eacute; the first example of stylistic development from the inside to the outside, defining first of all the lines and characteristics of the passenger compartment according to the needs of the users and, only later, the design of the bodywork. Audi grand sphere anticipates a full electric D segment Sportback (sedan coup & eacute;) with roominess; and modularity; incomparable interiors compared to traditional models.

The first concept that will be; revealed will be & agrave; Sky Sphere which we will be able to see at the Pebble Beach Concours d & # 39; Elegance in the middle & agrave; August. Later it will be & agrave; Grand Sphere concept unveiledwhich can & ograve; be seen as a kind of preview of the electric flagship of the house of the 4 rings that will debut in 2025, the result of the work of the Artemis project. Car that will do & agrave; its appearance at the Munich Motor Show in September. Of this concept, Audi also wanted to share some interesting teasers that anticipate what we will see in September. To discover Urban Sphere , however, you will need & agrave; wait until 2022.

To get to the design of the cars, Audi no longer relies on; to a single person as he could have access many years ago, but to an international network of designers who work closely with each other.

The Audi Design Centers in Beijing, Malibu and Ingolstadt constitute the & ldquo; forge & rdquo; of the style of the four rings. Through the Ingolstadt headquarters, the offices are united in a network and work closely together, while operating in a competitive framework: before projects become reality, they must establish themselves internally. The Design Centers in China and the United States are the & ldquo; seismographs & rdquo; of the Brand: they incorporate local trends in the areas of mobility, art and culture and adapt their work to the national and global market.

Each Designer Center brings its contribution, and all this work is coordinated by the Marc Lichte team, Head of Audi Design. Overall, Audi Design involves 450 creatives from 25 countries. Other prominent figures include Norbert Weber who has been directing Interior Design since October 2020 and Philipp R & ouml; mers who & egrave; at the head of Exterior Design since March of this year. Together with Marc Lichte they design the car of the future.

L & rsquo; incipit for any Audi project & egrave; consisting of a creative phase based on the needs of the end users. A fundamental prerequisite for a person-oriented development. They come like this; conceived new products and services and made the first design sketches. The first sketches are drawn with a graphic tablet or, sometimes, traditionally with pen and paper. Wherever and at any time, designers can give free expression to their creativity. In a second phase, the comparison and exchange of ideas becomes crucial.

The digital data developed in the Beijing and Malibu offices are transmitted to the Ingolstadt Design Center to be transformed into clay models . Despite the digitization of creative development, the physical specimen remains indispensable for decision-making.
