Weekend Viewing Tips: Black Widow, Virgin River & More

We hardly watch traditional TV anymore. Streaming video services like Apple TV+ (try for free), Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video are more important than ever. But local providers such as Videoland, Film1 and Ziggo also have plenty to offer. More series are added every week and it is nice if you know which series, films and documentaries really stand out. We have therefore made a selection.

Black Widow

On display at: Disney+

This is what many people have been looking forward to: the new Marvel movie starring Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanova. After several postponements, the film can now finally be seen, but you do need VIP access. From July 9, you can stream Black Widow as a Disney+ subscriber for a one-time additional payment of €21.99. In three months, Disney+ subscribers will be able to watch the film for free. So it's a matter of pay or wait, just like it was with Mulan and Raya and the Last Dragon.

From birth, Natasha Romanova has been entrusted to the KGB, which has trained her to be the ultimate weapon and their best agent. When the Soviet Union falls apart, she is doomed and forced to move to New York. Black Widow started in 1995 in the US state of Ohio. Young Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) lives a quiet life with her sister Yelena, father Alexei and mother Melina. But nothing is as it seems: father and mother turn out to be Russian spies and the family is not real. When one day they have to flee the US, the family falls apart.

The film is set 21 years later, just after the events of Captain America: Civil War (2016). General Dreykov (Ray Winstone) is still alive and wants to avenge the death of his daughter by taunting Black Widow. He sends a team of ‘chemically subjected’ black widows from all over the world, of which Yelena (Florence Pugh) is one. Fortunately, Yelena sees through the game in time and comes into contact with her sister Natasha.

Virgin River (S03)

On display at: Netflix

Netflix's Virgin River is a romantic drama that still has plenty to think about. Season 1 sees Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) run away from her painful past in Los Angeles. She became a midwife and nurse in training in the fictional Northern California town of Virgin River. There she discovered that her past could not be completely put behind her and that the small town brings new dramas. Season 2 went even further, ending with a huge cliffhanger for almost every character.

Are Mel and Jack back together? Will Preacher stay in Virgin River or will the new job in San Francisco entice something more? What medical news did Doc Mullins want to tell Hope just before they were interrupted by a surprise party? And who shot Jack? That will hopefully reveal the third season.

Is Jack dead? The trailer makes that clear right away: he is alive and kicking and cannot be avoided from Virgin River.
