Death Stranding Director's Cut: More content and technology cost ten euros extra

On September 24th, Death Stranding (test) will be “revised and expanded” as Director's Cut for the PlayStation 5. Again, the upgrade is chargeable, it is currently reserved exclusively for the Sony console.

The upgraded version of Death Stranding will include “more weapons, equipment, and vehicles, as well as a number of new modes, missions, and areas,” as well as “expanded storylines and user interface improvements.” All additional content on the PC from crossover promotions, for example with Half-Life and Cyberpunk 2077, also make it into the Director's Cut.

Part of the new features will be a shooting range and a racing mode, in which the game world is driven on circuits. Much of it should be easy to find, Sony promises. The attached assurance that all innovations were only developed after the release of Death Stranding protects its authors from the accusation of having cut the game.

There should also be other online functions that, among other things, allow playing with friends. Sony does not yet want to reveal what can actually be expected with this – a common marketing strategy of all publishers, which procures additional publication material. On the technical side, support for haptic feedback and adaptive triggers of the PlayStation 5's DualSense controller are integrated. The developers are also adding 3D audio and two display modes. You can choose between 60 frames per second and upscaling or native UHD resolution. Which frame rate is achieved here remains open, assuming 30 frames per second.

Next Gen will be more expensive

When upgrading to the new version of the game, the saved games can be transferred from the PlayStation 4. For the innovations, however, Sony takes a fee: Anyone who owns or buys the PlayStation 4 version can purchase the PlayStation 5 update for ten euros. Sony had already proceeded in a similar way with the Director's Cut of Ghost of Tsushima, which is, however, also offered for the PlayStation 4.

Here a new strategy is emerging: A next-gen price increase is hidden in the form of a slightly expanded version of the game, so that a higher value arises on paper – at least during a period of getting used to it. At the same time, this creates the impression that the new console is the better one, after all, only there is the more extensive and therefore “better” version of the game.

There is no mention of an update of the PC version in the announcement. If so, then, as with porting, there will be a time delay.
