For insiders: Qualcomm presents its own Snapdragon smartphone

Qualcomm itself enters the market in cooperation with Asus and the “Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders”. Behind the somewhat bulky name is the manufacturer's community, which has put together a complete package of smartphone, headphones and accessories. The set should also be available in Germany in August for $ 1,499.

Instead of just supplying processors and other chipsets to smartphone manufacturers, Qualcomm wants to bring its own smartphone onto the market in August. However, Qualcomm does not fully undertake the bold undertaking on its own; instead, partner Asus is also responsible for the development. The target group of the smartphone are the so-called “Snapdragon Insiders”, the Qualcomm social media community that was launched in the spring and which as of the end of June had 1.6 million “insiders” on platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, WeChat, JD .com and Tmall counts.

Market launch in August for $ 1,499

However, the smartphone is not offered exclusively for Snapdragon Insiders. It is slated to go on sale in August via Asus' online store at a price of $ 1,499 in the United States, China, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea and, later, India. The price in euros should be based on the US price, which is stated before taxes. In this country, a recommended price in the range of 1,300 euros can therefore be expected.

Set of smartphone, headphones and accessories

For the price, buyers receive a lavishly packaged set consisting of the smartphone, true wireless headphones with ANC, Quick Charge 5 charger, bumper case and two USB Type-C cables. But first a look at the smartphone.

The design comes from Asus

Designed by Asus, the “Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders” brings back memories of the soberly designed QRDs from Qualcomm, the “Qualcomm Reference Designs”, on which the chip developer shows new processors and the press has the first benchmarks carried out. The only branding is on the back in the form of a Snapdragon logo illuminated with white LED including lettering underneath. Between the logo and the triple camera there is also the fingerprint sensor on the back, which is the 2nd generation 3D sonic sensor, which is celebrating its premiere here for the first time not integrated into the display.

AMOLED display with 144 Hz

Speaking of the display: The 6.78-inch AMOLED panel comes from Samsung and delivers 2,448 × 1,080 pixels at 144 Hz. Qualcomm gives the Delta-E value with & lt; 1, which speaks for a factory calibration. The DCI-P3, NTSC and sRGB color spaces are covered by 111.23 percent, 106.78 percent and 150.89 percent, respectively. Other key data are support for HDR10 and HDR10 + as well as protection by means of Gorilla Glass Victus. Qualcomm specifies the outdoor brightness as 800 cd/m², the peak should be 1,200 cd/m².

Snapdragon 888, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB UFS 3.1

Unsurprisingly, a current Snapdragon chip is working under the hood, but not the very latest Snapdragon 888 Plus, but the normal version. The smartphone simply comes too early for the slightly higher clocked chip to be available. Clock rates and expected performance of the Snapdragon 888 in the “Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders” do not differ from other devices on the market. Qualcomm has equipped the device generously with LPDDR5 RAM (16 GB) and UFS 3.1 (512 GB).

Extensive connectivity including 5G mmWave

Qualcomm's influence can be felt elsewhere, however: in connectivity, especially in the 5G area. Only a global model (SKU) is planned for the smartphone, which is equipped with extensive support in the area of the sub-6 GHz and even the mmWave bands. Smartphones for Germany usually do not support the mmWave frequencies so far. In Europe, too, mmWave will initially play a role on band n258 at 26 GHz in the coming years, after currently primarily band n78 at 3.5 GHz is used in this country. Frequencies reallocated from 3G times are also used for n1, n3 and n28. The “Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders” fully supports the following cellular standards.

  • Standards: GSM/GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA +/DC-HSPA, FDD-LTE, TD-LTE, 5G Sub 6 SA/NSA, 5G mmWave
  • 5G Sub 6 NR: n1, n2, n3 , n5, n7, n8, n11, n12, n13, n14, n18, n20, n21, n25, n26, n28, n30, n38, n40, n41, n42, n43, n46, n48, n66, n71, n77, n78 , n79
  • 5G mmWave: n257, n258, n260, n261
  • FDD-LTE: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 32, 66, 71
  • TD-LTE: 34, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 46, 48
  • WCDMA: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 19
  • EDGE/GPRS/GSM: 850, 800, 1,800, 1,900 MHz

For the integrated Snapdragon X60 modem, Qualcomm gives up to 42.2 Mbit/s or 5.76 Mbit/s with 4G for (no longer relevant) 3G up to 2.0 Gbit/s or 150 Mbit/s and with 5G up to 4.4 Gbit/s or 542 Mbit/s for downlink and uplink.

Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2

The topic of connectivity continues in the area of WLAN, where with Wi-Fi 6E including 2 × 2 MIMO, the latest standard via the company's own FastConnect 6900 platform for up to 3.6 Gbit/s is on board, which has recently also been implemented the European Commission has agreed on a spectrum reduced to 480 MHz.

FastConnect 6900 also provides Bluetooth 5.2, which is designed for Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound (QSS). QSS is an interplay of different chipsets from the company that have been coordinated to improve audio quality, stability of the connection, latency and energy efficiency. For example, the wireless transmission of 24-bit audio at 96 kHz including the aptX Adaptive codec is supported.

True wireless headphones from Master & amp; Dynamic

The MW08 true wireless headphones from Master & amp; Dynamic with a recommended retail price of 299 euros. The headphones are equipped with the Qualcomm QCC5141 Bluetooth SoC and thus form the counterpart to the Bluetooth equipment in the smartphone. In the Snapdragon set, the model number of the headphones is MW08SI and a Snapdragon logo adorns the outside. The headphones and their charging case have been matched to the smartphone in midnight blue. For the headphones there Master & amp; Dynamic up to 12 or up to 10 hours runtime with ANC. A further 30 hours are made available via the charging case with a USB Type-C port on the side. The headphones should be able to charge to 50 percent within 15 minutes.

A special “HyperSteady stabilization” can be activated for up to 1080p60. The front camera offers 24 megapixels at a focal length of 27 mm in 35mm format.

Quick Charge 5 power pack included

The scope of delivery of the smartphone also includes a Quick Charge 5 power supply unit that supplies up to 65 watts for the 4,000 mAh battery, which can only be charged using a cable. Qualcomm names loading times of 30 minutes for 70 percent and 52 minutes for 100 percent. The box also includes two braided USB Type-C cables, each 1 m long. A bumper case, which is only put over the frame of the smartphone and is supposed to protect it, is also included.

Delivery with stock Android 11.0
