Rumor: 'Smaller chip in Apple Watch Series 7 gives room for larger battery'

The Apple Watch is quite a small device, so there is little room inside for all the parts such as the battery, the screen, the Taptic Engine and the sensors such as the heart rate monitor. Every step to make the parts smaller is therefore profitable, because you create space for other parts. According to Digitimes, the Apple Watch Series 7 will get a smaller chip. This potentially gives Apple room for additional parts, but which ones are still the question.

‘Smaller chip in Apple Watch Series 7’

The next generation Apple Watch will use a technique called double-sided System in Package (SiP), according to Digitimes. SiP is the all-in-one chip that Apple has been using for years, but in the Apple Watch Series 7 it would be two-sided. This allows the chip to become a bit smaller and that creates space for other parts. This immediately leads to the necessary speculation.

The past has shown that Apple often uses extra space that is freed up in a device for improved or new parts. For example, Apple removed the headphone jack on the iPhone 7 so that there was more room for the Taptic Engine. In the Apple Watch Series 7, for example, Apple could use the extra space for new or improved sensors. A glucose meter has been rumored for some time, although the most recent rumors predict that it won't be until 2022. Another option is for Apple to put a bigger battery in the next Apple Watch, although no sources have yet claimed that.

Recent rumors spoke of a better screen and faster processor in the Apple Watch Series 7. Apple is also said to have planned a new flat design for the Apple Watch Series 7.
