That the corona virus had originated in a Chinese laboratory was until recently dismissed in unison as a dangerous “conspiracy theory” by the media and authorities.

But after US Left President Joe Biden opened up that the theory could be true the horde suddenly turned, and now the lab track is instead described as completely probable.

This reversal has been noticed by the Media in P1. The program interviews Bodil Appelquist, science reporter at SVT, who says that the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, MSB, and the media have been involved in stamping the lab track as a conspiracy theory.

– There was somehow some consensus then, a year ago, that this was a conspiracy theory, she says.

Appelquist says that already at the beginning of the pandemic she was contacted by several researchers who thought she should take a closer look at the lab in Wuhan, to which the suspicions are directed.

She had already done extensive research, but was met with such hesitation and questioning from her editorial staff that she closed the project.

– I absolutely do not want to be seen as a conspiracy theorist. It would be devastating for me as a journalist, says Bodil Appelquist to Medierna in P1.

She continues:

– That we did not dare to take it then in another way I think is a bit problematic.

Världen Idag has asked the responsible publisher on SVT why the state TV giant took so long to report on the lab track.

“SVT has followed the global research situation around the pandemic. On the whole, SVT Nyheter's reporting does not differ from other newsrooms “, the press desk answers via email.
