– Some have gotten it about the hind foot that cats always manage, but the fact is that a cat is completely dependent on humans to survive. They do not have nine lives but need care to live a long and secure life. It is therefore important that you only get a cat if you are completely sure that you can take care of it for the rest of its life, says Sarah Frelin Ekvall, marketing manager at Arken Zoo, in a statement.

Med winter comes cold and snow which means that the prey out in the wild will be fewer and the cat needs someone to feed and take care of it.

If the abandoned cat does not find a new human home, there is a great risk that it will freeze or starve to death.

– Despite the fact that the Animal Welfare Act was updated in April 2019 and that it is now forbidden to abandon domestic animals, it still occurs. 100,000 abandoned cats is not acceptable. All cats have the right to a safe and secure home, says Sarah Frelin Ekvall.

Five tips on what to do if you find an abandoned cat
Check if the cat is ID-marked in the form of a tattoo in the ear or chip marking. Do this to a veterinarian and in that case contact the owner.

2. If the cat is not ID-marked, you can check with the police if they have received a report of a missing cat. Then you must report to the county administrative board, which can decide whether the cat should be taken care of.

3. If there is a Facebook group in the area for neighbors, you can publish a post to search for the owner of the cat. It is also good to report to the site vilse.nu.

4. If the cat is thin, you can give it suitable food and water. Note! If the cat is not skinny, do not give it food as cats like to find more homes to eat at even if they are not abandoned.

5. Contact a cat home nearby to see if they have room to receive the cat. There are cat shelters around Sweden that work voluntarily to help abandoned cats, but these are often full and do not necessarily have the capacity to receive new cats. If you as a finder have become attached to the cat and want to take it into your family, you can keep it after a certain time. But think through the decision carefully before the cat moves in with you.
