European car market May 2021: the return to pre-pandemic numbers? far

The auto market continues to show clear signs of difficulty. According to data provided by ACEA, in May 2021 , in Europe (EU-EFTA countries and the United Kingdom included), 1,083,795 cars were registered . Numbers, however, which must be carefully analyzed. In fact, the month of May 2021 shows a growth of 73.7% compared to the same period of 2020. The comparison, however, is not; corrected as last year the Old Continent was still struggling with the effects of the first lockdown.

THE CRISIS OF THE CAR MARKET

Going to look at the data for 2019 , you can & ograve; to see how the European car market is still far from returning to normalcy. Two years ago, 1,444,173 cars were registered. Compared to the pre-pandemic values, this is a decrease of around 24.95%. A comparison with April 2021 shows a slight improvement given that 1,039,810 vehicles were registered at European level in that month. Overall, the numbers once again highlight the difficulty; of the automotive sector which in addition to the consequences of the pandemic is now facing the chip crisis.


ACEA then highlights the numbers of the main European markets . Also in this case we have strong increases as the comparison is; it was always done with 2020. According to these data, for example, the Italian market would have grown by 43% in May. Already we know, however, that compared to 2019 there is on the other hand, a significant decline of 27.9%.

Taking a look at the results of the main Automotive groups , Volkswagen totaled 251,078 registrations against 146,135 in 2020 and 305,116 of 2019. In second place we find Stellantis with 199,775 registrations. In 2020 (adding up FCA and PSA) there were 133,976, while in 2019 305,041. Third step of the podium for Renault ahead of Hyundai, BMW, Toyota and Daimler.
