What does the future of Windows look like, which Microsoft will present in a large-scale event on June 24th? Users get the answer already today: After supposedly authentic screenshots first made the rounds on the Internet, there is now an entire build of the new Windows as a download: And it speaks of Windows 11.

Test build is available online

Screenshots from a pre-release version with build 21996.1 first appeared on Baidu, but now Tom Warren from The Verge has many more screenshots, a first video and – based on Microsoft's Windows start sound compilation – the new Windows start sound 11 shared. This is possible because the entire build 21996.1 has now reached the network via unofficial channels. In addition to The Verge, Windows Central has also confirmed its legitimacy based on its own sources.

The UI is reminiscent of Windows 10X

The user interface of the new operating system, which is very likely really Windows 11, is reminiscent of what Microsoft had shown of Windows 10X at the end of 2019 – Windows 10X was however removed from the roadmap in May. Instead, priority should be given to a major design update for Windows 10, Project Sun Valley. Windows 11 may have been behind this for a long time, or Sun Valley will still be released for Windows 10. However, there is no clarity on this point at the moment.

Many questions remain open

Which path Microsoft will optically take with Windows 11 seems to be clear. There is still no information about what will differentiate “Windows 11” from Windows 10 and when it will be published. Microsoft should clarify both points by June 24th at the latest.
