On April 10, 2001, the upper house of the Dutch parliament approved a law that in practice allows doctors to perform assisted suicide. Since 2014, it is legal to provide euthanasia to children over the age of twelve, and in 2020 the law was extended to also offer children under the age of 12 the opportunity for euthanasia, according to the BBC.

The Netherlands was the first country in the world to adopt this type of legislation, and today active euthanasia has become very popular.

Now the country's government has decided that even dying children between the ages of one and twelve should be able to receive euthanasia.

In 2020, the highest was noted the figure ever for the number of cases of euthanasia in the Netherlands. Over four percent of those who died were helped to die.

In some parts of the Netherlands, between 12 and 14 percent of all deaths are the result of euthanasia, according to figures from Professor Theo Boer at the Theological University of Groningen.

“When Swedish politicians start studying this issue, the Netherlands must act as a warning for how Sweden could become in 10–20 years”, Boer writes in Dagens Samhälle.
