Domestic. Influenza and so-called winter vomiting (RS virus and calicivirus) had a tough time during the winter. There was no season for any of the diseases, as a result of the infection control measures against covid-19.

The Public Health Agency's new reports for the winter of 2020 to 2021 show that there was no disease season at all for viral diseases such as influenza, RS virus and calicivirus (winter vomiting disease) which are usually spread during the winter season.

– What we have seen this year is what we would call a historic non-season. Improved hand hygiene, the fact that we have met fewer people and that both children and adults have stayed at home to a greater extent when they have had symptoms has been of great importance, says AnnaSara Carnahan, epidemiologist at the Swedish Public Health Agency.

Other explanations are also a sharp reduction in travel which meant that, for example, the flu had not been introduced to Sweden or the rest of Europe. The spread of influenza has generally been very low in the northern hemisphere and also in large parts of the rest of the world.
