In iOS 15, Apple has given the Weather app another update. Instead of a long list of information, a weather page now consists of a collection of separate blocks. Check the weather using the new animations, the live maps or the updated graphic tiles at the bottom of the app. In this article we give you an overview of the new features of the trusted Weather app in iOS 15 that you should not miss.

  1. New animations and design
  2. Live maps
  3. Dynamic layout
  4. Blocks
  5. Notifications

#1 New design: over a thousand new animations

The first thing you notice is the brand new design. Apple has also added more than a thousand animations. These are based on the position of the sun, the clouds and the precipitation. So you really only need the Weather app to see exactly what the weather is like. A small side note is that these new designs can only be seen on iPhones with an A12 chip or newer (i.e. the iPhone XS/XR and newer).

The rest of the design has also been overhauled. In the weather forecast for the coming days you now also see colored bars that indicate the temperature and everything looks just a bit fresher. The overview of your selected cities has also received a new coat of paint.

#2 Live precipitation, air quality and UV index maps

At the bottom left of the screen you will now find a new card symbol. If you tap on it, you initially switch to a map on which you can see exactly what the temperature is per region. Then you can easily switch to the precipitation or air quality map. The precipitation map is not (yet) functional in the Netherlands at a local level. It is not yet a good alternative to the Buienradar app where you can see this. However, if you zoom out a bit, you can see how the precipitation is moving in Apple's Weather app over Europe. Finally, the air quality per area can also be viewed. This works in the Netherlands, but also in other European countries such as Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.

#3 Weather controls Weather format

Depending on the weather forecast, some information blocks are given higher priority. In the event of extreme wind, rain, bad air or sun, appropriate notifications will appear at the top of the page. For example, on the screenshots below you can see that due to the rain or the poor air quality, the relevant information is visible earlier. Apple also provides more context with some explanations about what the weather means, for example on air quality.

#4 New information tiles

All the information the app provides was previously displayed in a long list. This made it seem a bit messy at times. The new design has all separate blocks that provide more information than before. This way you can see exactly whether the sun has already passed its peak and from which direction the wind is blowing. You cannot rearrange these information blocks yourself, but if there is an important weather situation, the information can automatically appear higher on the page.

#5 Precipitation notifications (but not in the Netherlands)

The Weather app can also provide notifications when it starts to rain, snow or hail. You can also receive a notification if it stops raining in the next hour. Unfortunately, these notifications do not work in the Netherlands. You can only receive notifications from cities in the US, UK and Ireland. You can find this setting by going to the overview of your set cities and tapping the round button with the three dots in the top right.
