The US police and security service FBI has been behind the app Anom, which roughly corresponds to the criminals' previously described Encrochat that allows people to communicate encrypted.
Now 300 criminal networks have been blown up in over 100 countries, according to Europol. In Sweden alone, 155 people have been arrested.
– The police are acting with full force against organized crime to reverse the negative development in every way with shootings and explosions. This is one of the biggest attacks on violent and drug crime both in Sweden and internationally and it is another step in the police's offensive work, says Linda H Staaf, head of the intelligence unit at Noa, the police's national operational department, during a press conference.
According to Samuel Hughes, an American academic who followed the development, it was an FBI informant who first tricked users into starting to use the encrypted app in Australia in 2018. Those who were able to start using Anom were previous users of it. closed the app Phantom secure.
The app became popular and more and more criminals were tricked into starting to use the system, which is based on a modified Google Pixel phone.
On Tuesday, the app Anom was also closed. But then it was too late, and reports of raids in half of Sweden occupied several newsrooms on Monday morning.
– It is exceptional in Sweden. We have never had such a large crackdown on gang criminals in Sweden before, says Minister of the Interior Mikael Damberg (S) in a comment.
The police operation, known as “Trojan Shield” was announced and confirmed by the authorities only on Tuesday.
