The official apology will be presented on two occasions: at the church meeting's solemn service on November 24 in Uppsala Cathedral, and at the planned conference Ságastallamat 2 in Luleå on October 21-23, 2022.

< p> – We must feel the dark story, even if it hurts. When we have betrayed the Sami people, we have also betrayed ourselves and God. An important step forward has now been taken when the church board prepares a public apology, after the Sami Council in the Church of Sweden has stated that the truth and reconciliation process has reached the point where it is appropriate for the Church of Sweden to pronounce an apology, says Archbishop Antje Jackelén in a press release.

The Church Board also allocates SEK 40 million in strategic development funds for the work during the ten-year period 2022-2031 to achieve the Church of Sweden's commitments in the matter, which is being referred to the dioceses. The overall commitments will be determined when all dioceses have submitted their consultation responses. Thereafter, the Secretary General will draw up an action plan for the coming ten-year period, in close dialogue with the Sami Council in the Church of Sweden and all dioceses.

– It is gratifying that the Church of Sweden is actively working to recognize and understand the consequences of the church's dark actions towards the Sami people throughout history, says Ingrid Inga, chair of the Sami Council in the Church of Sweden.
