Mercedes and Aci together for safe driving: my experience with a mini-course

The news is; just a few days ago: Mercedes Benz has signed a two-year partnership with the Aci-Sara Safe Driving Centers to promote the key principles of road safety , pursuing a strategy that runs on the double track of sustainability; environmental and safety. The idea is to aim for zero emissions and zero accidents, accompanying the automotive industry in the delicate transition phase in which it finds itself.

On the basis of the agreement, the centers of safe driving Aci di Roma (Vallelunga) and Milan (Lainate) will become the hub of activities; multipurpose didactics also thanks to the vehicles of the Mercedes range, while a third structure in the province of Bari will enter; in business in 2023. As explained by Radek Jelinek, president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Italy:

& quot; the partnership & egrave; an important signal of the need; to create a system and at the same time represent for us the opportunity & agrave; to be able to count on the support and logistics of excellent structures, with two hubs strategically distributed throughout the territory & quot ;.

The proposal & egrave; simple but effective: these are courses that are held during the day, lasting 8 hours, to test one's knowledge and skills; in terms of driving in extreme conditions , even with your own private vehicle. Then, classroom training followed by practical exercises in suitable areas.

PRACTICAL TESTS

During the inaugural day reserved for journalists I had the opportunity to experience first hand the usefulness; of the initiative, trying my hand at a couple of exercises set up ad hoc on the Vallelunga circuit . I must say that I have had a B license for several years now but I had never attended courses like this before, so I was quite curious.

The first lesson is; arrived even before touching the accelerator , because & eacute; the instructors reiterated the importance of the gaze and the driving position: the only way to react promptly to the dangers that arise is; keep your eyes on the road at all times, to anticipate movements on the steering wheel.

Similarly the seat must be adjusted in order to have maximum visibility. on the carriageway . The magic formula is: with the shoulders pressed to the backrest, the center of the steering wheel must be aligned with the chin and the wrist must rest on the steering wheel, making sure that the forearm flexes only slightly. The leg on the clutch should bend slightly to better absorb shocks, and the seat tilt should be more as close as possible to 90 & deg ;.

So, off to two very technical exercises, both on asphalt strips coated with a low-grip resin and suitably irrigated, which allows you to simulate at low speeds; (45 km/h) and therefore without risks, conditions much more & ugrave; dangerous in everyday life .

The first was to manage understeer when entering corners , and required a sensitivity; on brake and accelerator not obvious, since it is not my personal car that I am used to driving every day. However, thanks to the explanations of the instructor & egrave; everything went smoothly (better on the third attempt than on the second).

In the second exercise you had to face a skid simulator . In practice, it is a mechanical plate capable of imparting a sudden push on the rear axle to the vehicles, simulating a loss of grip. As a result, a dynamic oversteer is triggered, with the associated risk of spinning, which I managed to avoid with more; effectiveness on the second attempt while skidding a lot.

Fundamental, to overcome the exercises, to have fast reaction times and, in the second, a correct management of the counter-steering. Net, I would say two constructive and fun experiences that have enriched my wealth of knowledge; particularly useful if you consider that I set foot in the car convinced that I could manage them without problems and instead I found myself with some difficulties.

And this is exactly what it is; was fundamental, because & eacute; the first of the pillars of the safe driving courses organized by Aci is precisely the necessity; to undermine the excessive confidence given by familiarity; with the vehicle : driving our car we all feel safe and often end up risking risky maneuvers, with mixed results.

If most accidents depend on the human factor and even more so ; there are many near misses , that is accidents avoided by a whisker, after all there will be a reason. The governments of Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Slovenia, for example, have made it compulsory for the purposes of obtaining a license to attend safe driving courses similar to those of the ACI, and accidents among newly licensed drivers have decreased by 28%.

And you, have you ever considered taking a safe driving course?
