What many have known for months is now available in black and white: within a year, the GPU market has grown by 39 percent. The first quarter of 2021 follows the fourth quarter of 2020 almost on the foot, without the manufacturers being able to sell more graphics solutions.

With a decrease of 0.3 percent compared to In the previous quarter, manufacturers sold the same thing on paper. AMD and Intel lost 0.1 and 0.5 percent respectively, while Nvidia gained 0.6 percent of the market.

Increased delivery quantities can hardly be recognized so far, only Nvidia was able to sell around four percent more units, according to the report, which, given the situation in the market, is only a drop in the bucket. That is why manufacturers continue to be very cautious about their forecasts. Delivery and availability will remain poor well into the second half of the year and will probably extend into 2022, which is why prices will not ease anytime soon either.

The notebook is an additional growth driver

Above all, the notebook is the new growth driver with an increase of almost 50 percent compared to the previous year. In addition to CPUs with graphics units, new RTX solutions have been available since the beginning of the year and are represented in many notebooks, which explains the slight increase at Nvidia. AMD only followed suit a few days ago, but this should only become noticeable in the third quarter. This is followed by a variety of desktop APUs with integrated graphics, which are also taken into account in these analyzes, which should help AMD's market share.

In the overall market, Intel therefore remains the leading manufacturer, since almost every CPU that is shipped also offers a GPU unit. There are hardly any big changes here, compared to the previous year, Intel is doing a little better, while AMD has to give up slight shares and Nvidia is standing on the spot.

Nvidia dominates in the discrete market

In the market for discrete graphics cards, Nvidia maintains its market leadership with a clear 81 percent share, AMD is 19 percent. Compared to the previous year, AMD has lost, in the fourth quarter from even only 18 percent. What that looks like in the future should depend on the delivery quantities that AMD has ordered from TSMC.
