YouTube rolls out new design for Apple TV app (with major ads)

Google uses virtually the same design for the YouTube apps for smart TVs, game consoles, set-top boxes and other TV devices. This makes all apps for the big screen consistent in design and operation and makes it easier for Google to make changes across all devices. The latest YouTube app design for TVs has been around since November 2019 and has been rolled out to smart TVs and game consoles in recent months. Now it is also the turn of the Apple TV for the new YouTube design.

New design YouTube on Apple TV

The first thing you notice about the new design is perhaps the huge ad at the top of the video overview. The app can now show a huge advertisement. This will not always be the case and if you are a YouTube Premium user you will not see any ads at all. The ad takes up almost the entire screen and you can swipe it away by swiping to the right and choosing Do not show this ad again. But there is a good chance that another advertisement will replace it in the long run. The commercials that play before the start of a video are of course still there.

YouTube has also adjusted the overall design of the app. The background is slightly darker and the frames around the videos have been adjusted. The animations also seem a bit smoother while scrolling and the menu on the left side has been adjusted. You will now also find shortcuts to the genres games, music and news. Previously, these were at the top of the video overview. You therefore have to scroll a bit more to go to your own subscriptions.

Custom Video Player
The video player has also been slightly modified. This all looks a little tighter now and a bug has finally been fixed where a paused video would continue to play when you wanted to change settings such as image quality. YouTube still uses its own video player, instead of the default tvOS player.

With the new YouTube app now aligned with other TV versions of YouTube, the app still doesn't look like many other tvOS apps that do use the standard interface elements. If you do not yet see the new design itself, you can try to close the app and restart it. You do this by pressing the TV button on the remote twice and swiping up the YouTube app. The last time the YouTube app got a major redesign on the Apple TV was in February 2018.
