Knab officially announces Apple Pay, available soon

Update May 18, 2021 : Knab has now officially announced that Apple Pay will soon be available at the bank. The bank will support Apple Pay for both private accounts (your own account or an and/or account) and business accounts. It is not yet known when the bank will start with Apple Pay, but the bank speaks of “very soon”. Earlier the mention of Apple Pay was already discovered in the bank's terms.

In recent weeks, we at iCulture have already determined that the bank will start with mobile payments this spring. Since January, it has been possible to see in the App Store that the Knab app works together with the Wallet app. This is a requirement to be able to support Apple Pay. Now that the bank has officially announced it, we have to wait until it goes live for everyone. Usually new banks for Apple Pay are added early Tuesday morning.

Update May 4, 2021 : From July 1, 2021, new conditions apply to Knab. iCulture reader Giorgio discovered that the new Payment Terms and Conditions contain multiple entries to Apple Pay. For example, it says that “the Apple Pay terms and conditions” apply if you use Apple Pay. In the current version of the terms and conditions, this mention is not yet included.

In the business variant of the Payment Product Terms and Conditions, the same mention to Apple Pay. This suggests that business customers can also make use of this.

This is yet another confirmation that Knab is indeed planning to start supporting Apple Pay and it looks like it will be around July 1. In the past, new conditions at banks have been a good indication of the arrival of Apple Pay. The only thing the bank is now announcing about this is that they & lsquo; expect to start mobile payments this spring & rsquo ;.

Recently you could read on iCulture how Apple Pay is at the mercy of de Volksbank, which also includes SNS and RegioBank. As a result of our research, we also got the question from readers about the current situation with Knab, another smaller Dutch bank. The good news: There are strong indications that Knab will support Apple Pay.

Will Knab receive Apple Pay?

The bank usually gives the same answer to questions from customers on Twitter, for example, whether Knab will offer support for Apple Pay. The bank indicates that they & lsquo; expect to be able to offer mobile payment soon & rsquo ;.

Unfortunately, Knab does not indicate which providers of mobile payment this currently concerns. At the moment, Knab also does not yet support a form of mobile payment via NFC on Android, so it can be both Apple Pay and Google Pay. Google Pay has been available in the Netherlands since the end of last year, at bunq, among others. Knab says that because of & lsquo; agreements with the provider & rsquo; cannot say which party is involved. Given that there are agreements with an external provider, an own mobile payment app on Android (such as ING and Rabobank have) seems out of the question.

Knab already supports Payconiq, but that system only works with QR codes at select stores.

We asked Knab for clarification on whether or not to support Apple Pay. Knab's spokesperson indicates that the bank now plans to introduce mobile payments later this spring. She also does not want to make specific to iCulture what form of mobile payment this is about, but she believes & ldquo; the aim is to eventually offer it via all major providers & rdquo ;.
If requested, she also provides further explanation about the implementation in their systems. Originally, the plan was to offer mobile payment from the end of March 2021, but due to technical problems this has been moved to later this spring. That should be at least before June 21.

Knab: & lsquo; Technical problems with the introduction of mobile payment & rsquo;

The spokesperson explains to iCulture what exactly these technical problems entail.

& ldquo; To make mobile payments at Knab possible, we have to make adjustments to the systems that regulate payment transactions. For this we work together with a new partner, who we have to connect to our systems. This is complex and unfortunately takes longer than expected. The delay that has now arisen is due to connectivity issues between us and a third party supplier. & Rdquo; & ndash; Spokesperson Knab

From our interview with ING about Apple Pay, we know that the payment and processing systems need to be adjusted to support Apple's payment service. But the biggest hint that it really concerns Apple Pay, we see in the App Store.

Knab app already suitable for Wallet

Recently, Knab's app has been updated with support for the Wallet app. With banking apps, this can usually only mean one thing: support for Apple Pay. At all banks that currently support Apple Pay, adding support for the Wallet app was a clear indication of the arrival of Apple Pay at those banks. For example, the ING app received support for Wallet in May 2019, Wallet support was added to ABN AMRO at the beginning of October 2019 and Rabobank followed later that month. All a few weeks before the arrival of Apple Pay.

We also asked the Knab spokesperson if the Wallet app support is for Apple Pay or some other option, but unfortunately there was no substantive response.

All in all, we are hopeful that Knab will come with good news soon, although we are not 100% sure yet. Anyway, the signs are there and you can't say that about some other banks.
