While the available QLED displays are mostly based on LCD technology with quantum dot backlight, there are also “real” quantum dot displays in which quantum dot light-emitting diodes themselves emit light . BOE is showing such an AMQLED display with 55 inches and 4K UHD at Display Week 2021.
QLED is not the same as QLED
The abbreviation AMQLED stands for Active Matrix Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode, which are simply called quantum dot light emitting diodes. These are electroluminescent QLEDs that light up themselves with the help of electricity and represent an image as subpixels without the need for an additional backlight. Behind the available QLED televisions there is usually a conventional liquid crystal display (LCD) with LED backlight and quantum dot film.
Familiar with the savvy smartphone users The term AMOLED, which stands for Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode, is therefore not only related to AMQLED syntactically, but also from a technical point of view. Because OLEDs also emit light themselves. However, the inorganic QLEDs are generally considered to be more durable and also cheaper than the organic OLEDs and should also achieve a larger color spectrum, as BOE described some time ago.
AMQLED demo for Display Week 2021
In November 2020, the Chinese display manufacturer BOE had already presented what it claims to be “the world's first 55-inch 4K AMQLED display”. Another demonstration will now follow at the SID Display Week 2021 trade fair. The AMQLED display that can be seen in the video delivers 3,840 × 2,160 pixels and should achieve a very high contrast ratio of over 1,000,000: 1. The manufacturer speaks of a large color spectrum, with 90 percent being covered by the BT.2020 color space and, according to earlier information, 119 percent by the NTSC color space.
According to the BOE, the various layers of the AMQLED display are produced using the printing process, which optimizes the use of material: “ALL functional layers were ink-jet printed. Achieving material utilization rate over 90%.
BOE had already released AMQLED prototypes in 2017, which, with much smaller display diagonals of 5 inches and 14 inches, were aimed more at the smartphone and mobile computer sector. The 55-inch display with an aspect ratio of 16: 9, on the other hand, is a classic TV format and even then BOE had declared that the strength of AMQLED was in the area of such large displays.
Compared to AMOLED, AMQLED is widely considered to be less costly and have a longer life and a wider color gamut. It is also considered to be another disruptive display technology after AMOLED. It is especially competitive in the field of large-size active light-emitting displays.
However, it remains to be seen when the first AMQLED display in an end product will be closed will be buy. To the knowledge of the editors, no product has yet been announced.
