Venice and Sirmione hate electric cars … based on a true story

What sound does a broken electric heart make? Crack? Zap?

Hi, I'm the alter ego of the author of this article, maybe you will remember me for the apology for a diesel Euro 3 Land Cruiser. At the same time I am a full time electric driver with a Model 3 Long Range. Please do not make the mistake of considering me among the electric fundamentalists. I am not and I hate extremists on both sides.

Digging through my writings you will often find the phrase & quot; today there & # 39; & egrave; a right or wrong diet, there is the right one for everyone's needs & quot ;. So I chose electric, do I believe in its future and do I defend diesel when it is needed? Gi & agrave ;, because & eacute; life & egrave; made of shades. And stairs.

TRAVEL BY ELECTRIC: 3 SCENARIOS

By reducing to a minimum the travel scenarios that life can give us; parry in front, the list would be so large compound:

  • commuting and home/work commuting : the Italian average is; of 30/40 km per day but we also include those who make a hundred of them in this category. In short, & egrave; the scenario of everyday life, that made by traffic on the ring road in Milan or on the GRA in Rome, that of those who live in upper Brianza or in Lecco and have to reach their workplace in Milan. Davide did it with a plug-in for a week.
  • medium/long trips for work : I'm not talking about the commercial who shoots 600 kilometers in one day all in one breath and then makes fun of those who stop at a motorway restaurant for a 200 kilometer journey. I'm talking about who, like me, can & ograve; travel 200, 300 or 400 kilometers round trip to reach a work stop, such as from Milan to Turin or from Milan to Verona, Bologna and so on.
  • medium/long journeys for pleasure : this is the classic weekend day trip, the & quot; puntatina & quot; to Lake Garda or to Venice with return in the evening.

HOW THE ELECTRIC CAR FACES LIFE

Outlined these three scenarios, & egrave; it is clear that the electric car faces the first of the three head-on, albeit with the important asterisk to be read in one breath as the conditions of the financing in the promotional messages on the radio: 'se haiungaragedovericaricare o reload my work or have a column near your home & quot ;.

Now let's talk about the second scenario where the shadows are outlined. I already have you; told in my & quot; electrical year & quot; how to recharge the car, from the little e-Up! to the Jaguar I-Pace, it has never been a problem in my working environment. Nearby airports and car parks often have a slow or fast charging point and, in both cases, staying out for at least one day I can return with the car stuffed with electrons.

For situations where it is not & egrave; predicted a train or a plane, the norm in the last year of the pandemic, the rapid columns along the surroundings of the main motorway arteries have always allowed me to reach the goal. When I went to try Enyaq in Verona, for example, I loaded up for free in front of the Volkswagen headquarters but, those who don't do my job and travel from company to company, should find themselves in a similar situation to mine. On the other hand, an industrial site or an important company always has a column or, in the worst case, a blue socket to attach to.

So far I have always used these situations to tell you about the use of electric cars, only to realize that – every now and then – you can & ograve; also travel for pleasure. So it is I spent the last two Saturdays without thinking about work:

  • Milan-Venice-Milan with Model 3
  • Milan-Sirmione- Milan with Mokka-e

You will understand later why & eacute; I regretted not having taken Jarvis (this is what Model 3 is called) to go to Sirmione but, since for a strange ethical choice I really try the cars before writing or talking about them … well, I had to whip the Mokka-e.

WHY? VENICE AND SIRMIONE HATE ELECTRICITY

And here we are at the reason for the broken (electric) heart and why? Venice and Sirmione, so & igrave; like other cities & agrave; tourists & quot; hate & quot; electric cars. The quotation marks are for legal protection. Before the Mayor of Venice or Sirmione decides to sue me.

Another disclaimer: this is; the situation today, in May 2021. We hope that soon things can really change …

Venice

This in the picture is; the snapshot of the charging infrastructure of Venice, terrible for a city which should attract tourists and could perfectly exploit the many parking lots to create an electric oasis.

I arrive in one of the car parks before the Ponte della Libert & agrave ;, I leave the car in charge at a column & quot; slow & quot; in alternating current at 7/11 kW, I take one of the shuttles, I spend 4/6/8 hours in the city & agrave; and my battery & egrave; perfectly charged upon arrival, also avoiding 'stress it' with a Supercharger or with an Ionity.

The parking lots would be perfect for recharging but the free ones in Mestre have no columns. At a reasonable distance and served by the shuttles that go to Venice, there are only a couple of stations in the paid ones between Porta Gialla and Porta Rossa.

Those of Porta Rossa are currently inaccessible for work, the others do not work 24/7 and in any case they are certainly not 10-stall stations. A handful of electric tourists are enough to saturate the availability; of the area!

After the bridge the situation does not improve : those who have a Tesla fare better with two or three Destination Chargers in paid parking lots, bad for everyone else. I would have gladly paid the money but, with the amount of tourists that the city & agrave; del Doge (not the coins) has even in times of the yellow zone, they were all occupied. The only other station, an Enel X with two 3.7 kW sockets and two 22 kW sockets, is out of service since time immemorial.

Touch so to Superchargers save the situation : the extreme measure that in the original plans I would have liked to avoid in order to load in a & quot; slow & quot; way. during the day: exactly the way I mean mobility; electric. What would have happened if I didn't have a Tesla that can & ograve; access to a structured, practical, fast network with a good number of charging points close to the motorway?

The answer would come the following weekend with the trip to Sirmione aboard a Mokka-e …

Sirmione

Let's move on to Sirmione. The beautiful Sirmione, the one that starts the Catullian poem memorized at the Lyceum like a broken record: Paene insularum, Sirmio, insularumque ocelle …

Sar & agrave; also a pearl but, after having visited it with an electric car and when, tired from the fatigue of a trip to a foreign land, we reach our hearth, we cannot help but say: mentula, aedifica columna folgoris. Forgive me (or help me in the translation) the Latinists …

Looking at the map, the situation may seem decent. But it's not . The blue column is; a Tesla Destination Charger … for a change. It is located inside the Ocelle hotel and is intended for customers. From previous experiences, I can tell you that if you show up as a non-customer with a Tesla, there is; a good chance that they let you load it because & eacute; they frame you as potential high-spenders and want to try to build loyalty. More hard to pity them with a Mokka-e …

Excluding the Teslara column, therefore, it is necessary to contact those in the city. Too bad that the two on the left of the map are useless. They are part of the Enel X network but are located inside campsites and inaccessible structures: today, why? closed, in & quot; normal & quot; times because & eacute; reserved for customers. Two 11 kW columns remained in via XX Settembre: being the only functioning ones, they were obviously occupied … and in any case 5 kilometers from the city; old.

Result? I could not recharge while visiting the city & agrave; how I wanted to do. I then left Sirmione with 70 kilometers of autonomy to aim for the fast Enel X (60 kW) in Desenzano.

But bad luck sees very well: literally a minute before me is & egrave; stop a Kona Electric that has screwed my CCS Combo plug by a whisker.

ELECTRIC? A CASE? The Opel Mokka-e charging curve from 16% to 93% The Tesla Model 3 charging curve from 15% to 87%

The comparison of the graphs can seem unfair because with the Opel we are faced with a different category of car than the Model 3, & egrave; true. Hires for & ograve; more sense when we see that a Mokka-e Ultimate configured to approach the Tesla still costs 42,250 & euro; list and & egrave; dangerously close to the price of Elon's sedan.

Without considering that the Opel, even in the top-of-the-range set-up, does not have the power of Model 3 at all, it still has the 7 kW AC charger standard (the 11 kW three-phase is an optional 450 €) and in direct current is limited to a maximum of 50 kW.

The answer to the question of the title of this paragraph is; a no, at least in my case, but the experience that I have reported confirms two fundamental and interconnected points. When choosing a car you must absolutely consider your needs for mobility; and, having done this, parameter them to the real situation of Italy and of the areas where you intend to move.

Why & eacute; the electric is the future but the infrastructure needs a clear acceleration otherwise it risks becoming, especially for those who do not have the Tesla network available, a fight against the scarce resource: the charging station . In addition, commercial businesses and cities themselves must begin to enter the perspective of attracting the electric tourist by offering a service that must not be offered to make a profit but to act as a hook to another type of induced.
