The King's cars can be shipped from a new environmental zone

The Royal Family's fancy cars belong when Norway celebrates “seventeenth of May” and in other grandiose contexts. But in the coming years, Oslo's planned zero-emission zones can make up for it if the classic rides are to be picked up.

TT How can the king's old cars meet modern environmental requirements? The picture is from an exhibition in Oslo 2016, with a Volvo 652 from 1930 closest, the famous Buick Roadmaster from 1939 in the middle and an A-4 Packard 1942 on the right. Picture: Heiko Junge/NTB/TT On last year's national day, Norway's royal couple took an acclaimed ride on the parade route Karl Johan in his Buick Roadmaster from 1939. It is legendary as the “liberation car”, since the then Crown Prince Olav (1903-1991) rode in it when he returned to a liberated Norway after World War II. But veteran cars often lack all forms of exhaust gas treatment, and as in London and other world cities, zero emission zones are being prepared in Norway. Thus, the ruler of the capital advises the court to already now review its car fleet. – I do not want to get involved in the king and the court's choice of car. But one can hope that the royal family continues its long tradition of zero-emission cars, says environmental councilor Lan Marie Berg to the news agency NTB. – At the Technical Museum is one of the royal family's first cars, an electric car that the then Crown Prince Olav got as a child. And Crown Prince Haakon had an early version of (the Norwegian electric car) Think and also drives an electric car today. What Oslo's “zero emission zone” should look like has not yet been hammered out. But according to the plans, a smaller zone can be introduced next year, and then expanded to the entire inner city within 5-6 years. In such an area, only vehicles that do not emit toxic gases during operation may be driven. It disqualifies all cars with internal combustion engines, especially older ones – a car without exhaust gas can emit as many particles as a hundred newer petrol/diesel cars. case for the royal family to convert their classic cars to electric propulsion, which is a growing trend around the world. Or to hope for an exemption from the rules, which Lan Marie Berg is positive about. – Emergency vehicles are of course exempt, and we return to what applies to other special vehicles and events such as at May 17, the Nobel Prize ceremony and Pride.
