In terms of content, the remaster of the Mass Effect trilogy is convincing. The ratings are currently not great, however. This is due to the technical implementation, because the PC lacks platform-specific features that have long since become standard in 2021.
Long faces produced in this way are a surefire way of getting bad reviews. With around 700 reviews so far, the game has only received a “balanced” overall picture on Steam. Around a third of all reviews are negative. What they all have in common: They praise the entertainment value and the improvements in content, but criticize the technical implementation. The Legendary Edition feels like a quickly made console port, can be read again and again from the reviews.
Hardly Options
The graphics menu provides the greatest indication of a simple port without any major extra work. The resolution can be selected there; further setting options are limited to the (de) activation of dynamic shadows, anti-aliasing, motion blur, a grain effect and ambient occlusion. Mass Effect does not offer more options than “On” or “Off”, the usual controls for setting the level of detail and quality are missing in all three games, shows Rock, Paper & amp; Shotgun on.
Against criticism of the menus, the site also states that the game achieves high frame rates even with older hardware despite the significantly nicer graphics. A variety of options is therefore not necessary, that is to say. However, the statement is only based on a test on a single system with a Radeon R7 270X.
Better wait
On Steam the lack of an FOV- Regulator and the support of 21: 9 resolutions criticized. The widescreen format can be rendered, but it is switched back to 16: 9 in cutscenes and videos. Another troublemaker is mouse acceleration; Commander Shepard cannot be controlled in a modern way with a mouse and keyboard, it is said with regularity.
The Legendary Edition is the latest example of the high risk of pre-ordering new video games or buying them spontaneously. Despite high Metacritic ratings, which averaged 85 out of 100 points, it is advisable once again to wait for extensive reports on the technology and the first round of patches. Especially with a remaster, you can't even miss a thing.
