From June 1, 2021 the time has come: you can no longer store unlimited photos at Google Photos. You must now start thinking about what you are going to do and possibly stop the automatic backup of photos, to prevent your storage from becoming unnoticed later.
This is about to change with Google Photos
The most important change is that photos in 'High quality' no longer get unlimited storage. Google Photos offers two ways to store photos:
- Original Quality: Full resolution, this has always been limited.
- High Quality: Applies compression & ndash; until June 1, 2021 this is unlimited, after that no more.
From the date mentioned, photos will be in & lsquo; High quality & rsquo; also count against your total storage space. With a standard Google account this is 15GB. You can buy more storage through Google One, or you can get more storage through school or work.
This is what happens to existing photos
Everything stored in Google Photos before June 1, 2021 will remain free and available. All photos in 'High quality' will still remain in your account and you will not be suddenly transferred to a paid account.
Anything you n & aacute; June 1, 2021 will count towards your total storage.
You should do this now
If you have any photos you want to store with Google Photos, now is the time to upload them. They will then be in 'High quality' saved.
The photos you provided in & lsquo; Original quality & rsquo; with Google always counted towards your total storage, so nothing will change for that. For people with a Google Pixel 2 or Pixel 3 there are exceptions, because they have received the promise that they can also upload unlimited in original quality.

Adjust your Google Photos backup settings
If you have set up to automatically send all photos to Google Photo, it might make sense to start thinking about what you are going to do after 1 June.
Here's how to check storage space:
- Open Google Photos on your iPhone.
- Tap the account icon at the top right.
- Tap Photo Settings & gt; Backup and synchronization.
- You can now see how much space is left. You can also see in what size you are saving (in this case & lsquo; High Quality & rsquo ;.
Optionally, you can purchase more storage if you want to continue to use Google Photos. You can checkout with your iTunes account.
You can also decide to no longer make backups of photos with Google, but with another storage service, such as iCloud Photo Library.
Quality of stored reduce photos
If you want to quickly make a backup of all the photos on your iPhone, without your Google storage becoming full, you could lower the resolution from & lsquo; Original quality & rsquo; Go to & lsquo; High Quality & rsquo ;.
You can also do this on the desktop by browsing to photos.google.com/settings in the browser. Google lists how much storage space you can save by going from original to high quality. At the top of the screen you will see a warning from Google explaining what will happen to Google Photos and how long you can do with your current storage space, based on your current backup behavior. In our case that was 4 years with 17GB storage.
