Asus has put the Zenfone 8 Flip next to the Zenfone 8, which, as the name suggests, is again equipped with the Zenfone 7's folding camera. The three rear cameras can be folded out of the housing for selfies and unusual perspectives. The hardware is on top level.
Because the normal Zenfone 8 with its compact design is now taking a completely different path than the Zenfone 7 a year ago, the Zenfone 8 Flip is now taking up this open position under a new name. With a 6.67-inch display and dimensions of 77.3 × 165.0 × 9.60 mm (W × H × D) at 230 g, the Zenfone 8 Flip corresponds more to what one would expect from a successor to last year's Zenfone 7 had.
The main camera becomes a selfie camera
The unique selling point is again the camera mechanism, which makes it possible to use the three rear lenses for wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and telephoto also for selfies. If you switch to selfie mode within the camera app, the entire camera module folds up by 180 degrees and looks at the user, who also has access to all three lenses and the dual LED flash for self-portraits. The camera app also allows you to choose intermediate levels of 45, 90 and 135 degrees in order to take photos from an unusual perspective or a helpful angle, for example when the smartphone simply cannot be held in any other way.

The unusual folding camera has several advantages: On the one hand, the user now receives the often better quality rear cameras for selfies as well. On the other hand, the user receives a greater variety of formats, as there are three lenses to choose from for selfies. Otherwise, the smartphone manufacturer would have to install three cameras there either in the frame or as a notch or punch hole for the same selection. This in turn leads to the third point, because with the Zenfone 8 Flip only the display occupies the front without a recess.
The OLED panel offers 1,080 × 2,400 pixels and works at 90 Hz, which can optionally be reduced to 60 Hz. In automatic mode, the smartphone selects the refresh rate depending on the content. There is an optional always-on function for the screen; alternatively, a status LED at the bottom left of the USB Type-C socket serves as an indicator for notifications or the charging status. Asus has also integrated an optical fingerprint sensor into the display.
Snapdragon 888 and a larger battery
The hardware platform is shared by the Zenfone 8 Flip with the normal Zenfone 8, so the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 is also used here. With 8 GB there is only half as much RAM, but the memory is the same size at 256 GB and can also be expanded here. With a memory card inserted, the dual SIM option is not available because the compartment only offers two slots.
Because the Zenfone 8 Flip is a much larger smartphone than the Zenfone 8 , fits a 25 percent larger battery with 5,000 mAh. This can be charged with a maximum of 30 watts via the included power supply unit. The scope of delivery also includes a thin bumper case that offers minimal protection. Due to the folding mechanism, the Zenfone 8 Flip does not have the IP68 protection of the smaller model.
Android 11 should get two upgrades
Asus wants the Zenfone 8 Flip in over the summer the shiny colors “Galactic Black” and “Glacier Silver” with Android 11 in Germany. The recommended retail price is 799 euros with 8 GB/256 GB. Asus plans to provide at least two Android upgrades for the smartphone.
