TT Härnösand will introduce a memorial to the victims of witch trials. Archive.Picture: Fredrik Sandberg/TT After 350 years, the municipality of Härnösand has decided to erect a memorial to the 120 people, mainly women, who were executed during the so-called witch trials in the 17th century, reports P4 in Swedish Radio. Agneta Nyholm has fought for the memorial for twelve years. SEK 500,000 is now set aside, but the design and location are not yet complete. Nyholm hopes that the memorial will be a force for women. – These are ordinary innocent women, it is 80-year-old women who have been stripped naked and beheaded and 20-year-old women who have been tortured. And the only thing I hear is about witches, how many witches did we have and should you have a witch monument. It is a violation of our female memory, she says, and hopes that the memorial will have a nice location.
