Compulsory integration gave immigrants lower grades

Domestic. A recipe for integration policy success, thought the politicians in Örebro and closed the problem-laden Vivallaskolan and moved the immigrant students to other schools in the municipality. But in the new schools, students received even worse grades.

In the new schools, an average of 42 percent of the students who came from Vivallaskolan achieved basic eligibility for upper secondary school after year nine.

In comparison with previous graduating classes at Vivallaskolan, it was a clearly worse results. For them, the average was 59 percent for the years 2001 to 2018.

Researchers at Örebro University are now ready with their report on how things went for the high school students from Vivalla.

– We show that a moving students from one school to another does not automatically lead to either increased goal fulfillment or integration, says Jan Jämte, one of the researchers, in a press release.
