Even before the introduction of iCloud Drive, Apple used the system called “iCloud Documents and Data” to sync data and documents. (in English 'iCloud Documents and Data'). This was introduced with the advent of iCloud, but was later replaced by the more advanced iCloud Drive. In a support document, Apple says that the old system is now being replaced by iCloud Drive, making this mandatory for synchronizing documents.

iCloud Drive becomes mandatory for synchronizing documents

The support document states that the transfer from the old system to iCloud Drive will take place in May 2022. It is not yet known exactly when this will happen in May. You may be wondering what that means for you as a user. The good news is that in most cases nothing changes.

If you're already using iCloud Drive, you won't notice the transition. Your files and data stay where they are and you don't have to take any action yourself. If you're not already using iCloud Drive at all, you'll need to take steps after the migration to see your files.

If you are not currently using iCloud Drive and are not enabling it before the May 2022 transition, you should still do so. You can switch on iCloud Drive via Settings & gt; your name & gt; iCloud & gt; iCloud Drive.

What's good to know is that upgrading to iCloud Drive does not affect the amount of storage space your files take up on iCloud. Even if you're already using iCloud Drive, the transition of iCloud documents and data won't affect your available storage space. Files are not suddenly saved twice.
