Update May 7, 2021 : It looks like WhatsApp is starting to back down on the impact on your WhatsApp account if you don't accept the terms before May 15th. WhatsApp tells The Next Web that it is no longer mandatory to accept the terms and conditions and that your accounts will continue to work even after May 15, even if you do not accept the terms and conditions. WhatsApp says (translated):

Although the majority of users who have received the new terms have accepted them, we understand that some people have not yet had the opportunity to do so.

No accounts will be deleted on May 15th due to updated terms and conditions and no one will lose features in using WhatsApp. We will remind users of the new conditions in the coming weeks.

So it seems that accounts are not being deactivated, although that is still stated on the WhatsApp website. Originally, accounts that did not accept the terms after May 15 would be given the status of an inactive user. As a result, you could not read and send new messages. As it looks now, that is no longer the case. Instead, you will be regularly asked to accept the terms and conditions.

Original article
The new WhatsApp terms that will take effect in May 2021 are quite controversial. Initially, there was a lot of uncertainty about what WhatsApp would or would not share with Facebook. Not much will change for European users with the entry into force of the new conditions. WhatsApp states in the new conditions that companies can manage their chats with tools via Facebook, which means that information can be shared when you chat with a company via WhatsApp. If you do not accept the new terms and conditions, you will no longer be able to send messages.

Do not accept new WhatsApp terms and conditions? No more reading or sending messages

WhatsApp explains on a support page what the consequences are if you do not accept the conditions. Your account will then be converted to that of an inactive user. This means that you can still receive calls and notifications for a short period of time, but reading and sending messages in your chats is not possible. So someone can call you or send you a message, but it is not possible to read what is in a message or reply to it. You have a few weeks after May 15 to accept the terms.

As a result, WhatsApp obliges you to accept the new conditions, because otherwise the most important functions of the app will be deactivated.

Two versions of new conditions
There are, as it were, two versions of the conditions: one for users within the EU and one for all other users. Little will change in the version for within the EU: WhatsApp describes how companies can manage their chats via Facebook tools and the chat app provides more information about how WhatsApp processes data. In the version outside the EU, more information is shared with Facebook, such as your phone number.
