Rwanda: A country makes the rain
The objective of the project: The rural population in the North-West of Rwanda, is supported on the consequences of climate change and adapt better in the future, against the storm prepared to be.
Project implementation: Through the construction of Ecovillages can refugees from flooded regions or farmers from high-risk areas be resettled. Erosion and climate change are tackled through sustainable water and soil management.
Project partners: Several organisations are involved, including Care International, local NGOs, Development Rural Durable (DRD) and the Association pour la Conservation de la Nature au Rwanda (ACNR), farmer cooperatives, as well as national government organizations.
Project funding: partly Financed by funds of the UNFCCC adaptation Fund, with the support of the International climate initiative (IKI) of the Federal Ministry of the environment.
Rwanda’s economy is supported by agriculture and the work of small farmers. Approximately 1.4 million rural households are the agricultural income-dependent and deny it for a living. But 90% of the arable land are located on Slopes, and this is particularly so in rain-prone for strong. Flash floods tear regularly fertile soil and Crops, and entire communities lose their livelihoods.
Some affected farmers have now found a new home in the Ecovillage Kabyaza Green Village. Here, rain water is collected and the fields are terraced on the Slopes created by the Erosion to stop.
