Athletics world Championships in Doha: problems with OGM

Empty ranks, cooled stadium, heat, outside, problematic human rights situation and the athletics world Championships in Doha, not only with sports fans for a shake of the head.

Before the final 1500-Meter race of the decathlon, the Khalifa was darkened stadium. On the tartan track of the images and names of the later Surprise world champion Niklas Kaul and his competitors were projected. Then, a spotlight Spot from one to the next athlete, the Whole mood wandered accompanied by music.

With these show effects, the organizer of the world Cup in Doha conceal since the days of the Khalifa stadium, in the best case is half filled with spectators, even though for days free cards are distributed. Probably never before has there been such a mood-poor world Championships in athletics, such as the, currently ongoing in Qatar.

Marathon starting at midnight

The Marathon Giovanna Epis of Italy is collapsing:

One of the few that are excited about the world Cup in Doha, is the Briton Sebastian Coe, since the 2015 President of the world athletics Association IAAF. “I can’t remember a world Cup that was on this level,” said the former world-class runner who had won in 1980 and 1984 Gold in the 1,500 meters. “It was never so hard to win a medal.”

Thus, Coe was referring to the large power density – but not the sometimes hair-raising conditions under which the athletes compete. The marathon runners will start on Saturday at midnight to escape the heat. The race of the women last weekend at 32.7 degrees Celsius, and a humidity of 73.3 percent had been measured, in spite of the late start date. Only 40 of the 68 runners had reached the goal.

“Ecological Madness”

The Khalifa stadium, which will also be used for the football world Cup in Qatar in 2022 used, is cooled by cold air jets at the bottom of the bleachers to 25 degrees. The stadium has no roof, the cold air is blown quasi through the open window into the desert sky. It was “environmental madness,” said Monika Lazar, of the DW. The sports policy spokesperson of the Green group in the German Bundestag referred to the world Cup, also on other levels as a “Disaster”.

Cooling air from the Depths of the Khalifa stadium

Lazar refers to, among other things, on the allegations of corruption in connection with the award of the title fights at Doha in 2014, as well as at the world Cup for the first time, the cameras at the start, the athlete blocks “in the step films”. Do you particularly feel sorry for the athletes, the Green party politician, “because you have to pay for the bad decisions of associations: you have to cheer in front of virtually empty stands. They collapse in part during the day due to the heat or need to compete in their competitions because of the TV marketing, and the heat of the night hours.”

Blatant Violations Of Human Rights

Problematic is also the situation of human rights in Qatar, the human rights organizations with a view to the upcoming football world Cup since years, the point remains. As before, the state of human rights “blatantly would be in the Gulf” violated, says Amnesty International. “The situation of labour migrants has not improved still significant,” says Regina Spöttl, Qatar-expert with Amnesty, the DW.

“The exploitative sponsors system Kafala exists under a new name, and will contribute to a disproportionately large dependence of the workers from their employers: passports continue to be retained, residence and work permits are not renewed. Most of the workers periods continue to be in insufficient Camps far outside the city you live in. Many of them get their wages late or not paid.”

Workers accommodation in Qatar

Meanwhile, the workers could sue for their rights, says Spöttl. “However, these arbitration bodies in terms of personnel are seriously understaffed, so that the procedures take a lot of time. Many migrant workers travel therefore, empty-handed back in their home countries.” Amnesty complained that the government was now working with the ILO, the organization of work of the United Nations, but not with human rights organisations. So there is a joint Initiative of the ILO and Qatar, in order to improve the occupational health and safety act in the Gulf state, says Spöttl: “reforms remain incomplete, however, new laws have loopholes. The membership in trade unions for migrant workers is still forbidden.”

“You know nothing Good”

The question is why world sports award bodies such as the IAAF or FIFA at all major events in a desert country like Qatar. With the exception of financial reasons arguments can hardly be found. “The athletics world Association for Disaster should be a lesson to you, just with a renaming of the Association [the IAAF announced in the future, “World Athletics” – Anm. d. Red.] it’s not done. The Sad thing is: Many of the problems were foreseeable,” says Green politician Monika Lazar and take a look at the next big event in the Emirate: “in 2022 the football world Cup, the men’s the next sport you can guess at the big event in Qatar in front of the door, nothing Good.”
