Night at the Museum – a Berlin invention

At the weekend, Berlin invites you again to a “Long night of the museums”. Such Events are now available in more than 120 cities worldwide. But Berlin nights is the “mother of all the Museum”.

The Long night of the museums is a visitor magnet

It’s a balmy summer promises to be night. Perfect conditions for the “Long night of the museums” on may 31. August for the 39. Time in Berlin. From 18 o’clock in the evening until 2 o’clock in the Morning will again be tens of thousands of people on the go. You can stroll from Museum to Museum, or climb into the Shuttle buses that bring you to the next place. Smaller houses and galleries also open their doors to as many of the major museums and memorials in the capital.

The cultural night is traditionally on the “Museum island”, this time with a dance performance on the Grand staircase of the recently opened James-Simon-Galerie. A total of 75 museums in Berlin open their doors. 750 events are on the programme: special guided tours, lectures, films, Workshops, a culinary and Musical.

A Marketing idea is to export

The Start in the Winter of 1997 was much more modest: 18 homes participated in the first Long night of the museums, including the Museum of natural history, the German Historical Museum, the berlinische Galerie, the Gropius-Bau and the castle Charlottenburg. The idea of the unusual opening Hours came from Marketing experts. The goal was, the Locals and the guests stepping in the museums of the city of lure.

The action became an instant success. Over 30,000 visitors flocked to that first Long night in the museums. At the second Berlin edition in August 1997, 27 houses have been involved already. Prompt, the next record number of visitors: 50.000 experience hungry.

The Marketing Hit soon made international the round. Today, there are the long Museum nights in more than 120 cities worldwide: in London, Paris and Amsterdam as well as in Bratislava or Buenos Aires.

Program for regulars and newcomers

Also in Berlin, the concept has redeemed none of its appeal. On the contrary, the Long night of the museums of new Fans reveals always. Surveys showed that in the past year, 54 percent of the visitors were there for the first Time.

This summer, a rise of ten new museums to the program, including the newly opened Pergamon-Panorama, the New synagogue of Berlin, the castle Biesdorf, the Heimatmuseum Zehlendorf and the Open-Air exhibition “The war and I”.
