German short films at the film festival in Sarajevo

The Sarajevo Film Festival is considered to be the Film Event in the Balkans. Three short films from Germany, special attention was paid to this Time – mainly because of their seemingly difficult topics.

With great ease, Ulu Braun and Yalda tell Afsah their stories. The Berlin-based artist and Director brown (41), presented in Sarajevo, two movies –

“Burkina Brandenburg complex” and “Free time”. Both ran in the official competition program. It is the third Time that brown has presented his Work in Sarajevo.

“Free time” is, in principle, from art and photos, the brown in an animated film scores. The Film takes a digital trip between the real and the virtual world. It is a question of how the working life, and much in advance it is planned. Vacation and leisure time are becoming more and more important and devour more and more money. Live to work? Or work to live? These questions Braun’s Film, which explores how we in the future be able to determine our life revolves.

“The pressure is growing to use our spare time,” says brown in an interview with Deutsche Welle, “but can also provide us with the satisfied yet?” Someone told him that he was the time before the holiday, more to enjoy as the holiday itself. “This has led me deeper into the subject, to immerse,” says the Director. After each holiday, he wondered how he could improve his life, to come closer to what he wants from life, what excites him and what makes sense.

Ulu Braun has studied painting, experimental film and Animation in Vienna and Potsdam. He won the “German short film award” (2013), the “Artprize Berlin” (2014), the prize “Best German Film” at the International short film days Oberhausen (2017), as well as the “Arte prize” at the International short film festival Hamburg (2018).

Also, Braun’s Film, “Burkina Brandenburg complex” has a hallucinogenic dreamy Dimension, and reflects a part of the German reality. He connects the word of Burkina (Faso), with Brandenburg, an East-German Federal state in which many people have to foreigners problematic relationships. “In my Film, I combine aware of African and German,” says brown. The Film tells the story of a black woman who operates in a Brandenburg village, a Museum of Prussian culture.

“I turn around things and question why we are proud of what we do and how we behave, and what’s behind it “, the artist explains his approach to the topic.

Modern adaptation of bullfighting

“Tourneur” Yalda Afsah was given in Sarajevo, a lot of attention. “Tourneur” is part one of a documentary trilogy on the relationship between man and animal. Scene of a bullfight in the South of France. White foam is flowing in an Arena and clouds the vision of humans and animals. “Tourneur” shows young men in a life-threatening fight with a COP. Afsah is a highly artificial and at the same time, surreal staging, which, however, is very real, therefore, succeed.

In Sarajevo, Afsah also announced part two of their trilogy. It is about the obsession of one man, over, every part of an animal, to take every one of his muscles in complete control. The Film is shot, but still needs to be cut and edited. Part three will eventually turn to the topic of pigeons in training. He will deal with the Efforts of the people, these animals, which are actually a Symbol of freedom, to be dressed.

With the award winning film “The last portrait of the father” by Stefan Djordjevics the Sarajevo Film Festival came to an end.
